Update to thread:

I lost connection to a Magic Mouse, couldn't get my mbp to recognize it again, decided to turn Bluetooth on and off, but when after I turned it off, all the "On" options in preferences were grayed out.

In Mac OS Yosemite, there is no bluetooth.plist in Library/Preferences any more: there IS a file called bluetoothaudio.plist, which I suspect is different.

I deleted the bluetoothaudio.plist anyway, since a note in the thread above said don't worry - they're generated at startup anyway.

THEN I shut down completely (vs. "Restart", per another note in the thread) and restarted, and the "Turn Bluetooth On" options all reappeared, and my Magic Mouse reconnected automatically.

This is exactly what's happening to my bluetooth connection running Yosemite on Macbook Pro. It happens only after I've closed my mac to put it to sleep. A few hours later, when waking up my laptop, bluetooth cannot find my mouse. I turn off bluetooth and attempt to turn it back on but "on" is grayed out.

Did your work around permanently correct the problem? The problem corrects itself after a reboot on my system, but reoccurs after I close my mac and reopen a few hours later. From many of the posts I've been seeing, this appears to be a problem (to varying degrees) with Yosemite.

Nikk -- thank you SO MUCH! You're suggestion was the only one that worked for me. I tried deleting the {com.apple.Bluetooth.plist} thing from my library, then rebooting, and it didn't work; my mac automatically created a new identical file. Someone suggested resetting my SMC, but I was afraid to do so, not knowing the side-effects. Someone said "remove the device from the list", and I was like, "What device? What list?" When I typed "blue" from Activity Monitor, nothing happened. Most of the time when I read instructions, they're vague and I don't know what they're talking about. 98% of the time, when I google a problem and read solutions, it doesn't work for me, which is so very frustrating. I'm not young anymore and so I don't speak 'fluent computer.' I kept rebooting by restarting, and I had the same problem, a gray bluetooth that wouldn't activate. But when I actually SHUT-DOWN, my bluetooth finally connected. Phew! Now I can use my wireless Magic Mouse.
