how can I delete MacKeeper and repair the damage it has done (blocked internet access)?

I'd search for all its files using EasyFind. Enter "MacKeeper" and "Zeobit." Set EF to scan all files and folders, invisible, case insensitive, package contents. Search using boolean and phrase. If you can't "Destroy" from EF, use Reveal in Finder to trash and authenticate (give password) from there.

Also search in EF for "wine" and open Keychain in Applications>Utilities to be certain you don't find anything MacKeeper related there. Remove any MacKeeper cookies from your browser.

This is for MacKeeper, not the Mac Defender Trojan variant, which might be using the Mac Keeper name. (You want to stay far away from both.) For that, see the sticky at the top of the forum page.

The developer claims that if you have v1.0.3 or later you can drag the application to the trash which will activate the uninstaller. Answer one question as to why you are deleting it, the uninstaller will run and remove most of what it installed. This has worked for many users, leaving only some zeorbit passwords in the keychain, but others have complained of seeing MacKeeper popup ads long after the uninstall. WZZZ's procedure is little more effort but should ultimately be just as effective. i did the dragging it onto the trash and it asked the question thing, is there anything more i can do to get rid of it? there are no other repercussions so far.

Here's a list of the things that should be gone:

In Application folder:

- /Applications/MacKeeper.app

In System Library:

- /Library/Application/Support/MacKeeper

- /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.AntiVirus

- /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.plugin.AntiTheft.daemon

In User Library:

- /Users/~/Library/Caches/com.zeobit.MacKeeper

- /Users/~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.Helper

- /Users/~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.plugin.Backup.agent

- /Users/~/Library/Preferences/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.Helper.plist

- /Users/~/Library/Preferences/com.zeobit.MacKeeper.plist

where ~ is your username

Let us know if any of these are still present.

Then open Keychain Access and delete any passwords with zeobit in them.

Lastly download Find Any File or EasyFind and search for "mackeeper" and "zeobit". Again, if you find anything let us know what and where you found it, then trash it.

As far as we are able to determine, that should take care of it.

so this is going to sound really stupid but i dont know where the system and user libraries are. i searched for them using spotlight but couldnt find them.

there is nothing left in the application folder and easyfind didnt find anything either.

Yes, Spotlight isn't any good for finding folders and it won't look for anything in the System. EasyFind will.

To find your user library, just click on your home folder (the house with your userID next to it) and look for the Library folder.

To find the Sytem folder, click on your hard drive icon and the Library folder is right inside.

there is nothing left in the application folder and easyfind didnt find anything either.

They I'd say you have nothing to worry about. Be sure and delete those passwords from your KeyChain.

Hello ~ I've been reading these posts about MacKeeper. I bought and installed it mostly for the duplicate finder feature. The first hard drive scan I ran was clean. After talking with a rep to be sure it wasn't hurt anything I let it clean up cache files and delte some dupe documents I had. Didn't scan again for about two months. Aside from running slower which I attribute usually to a messy desk top or keeping tons of pics and files on my system instead of on another drive somewhere the only thing I've noticed is that all of my Adobe software takes waaaay too long to open now.

The only other scan I've done was just recently. It found this:

location: volumes/mypassport/programs/install_2004.exe file: TR/Crypt.ZPAK.Gen in it.

I moved it to quarantine.

I have two portable MyPassport drives. Only one of them has a programs folder on it which does not show the exe file in the finder window. Spotlight doesn't search USB's and portable drives? Never works when I try that.

These are my question's if anyone can answer:

If that file is on an external drive, HOW did MacKeeper see it when the drive was not connected to my imac when the scan was done?

If it really is one one of them, how do I find it and delete it?

I have a small thumb drive and another portable drive (not a mypassport) that I use for client work on a PC and so do transfer files. As someone else in the forum said, it would be wise to have a way to scan my portables.

Lastly, I've copied info from this forum about how to remove MacKeeper. This is paranoid and silly I know, but I'd feel better if I could be assured there'd be no retribution from MK for doing so. I'm not a computer geek and need my mac for work.

I thought I uninstalled Mackeeper ages ago, the trial version. My Mac has been incredibly slow recently and from advice from thexlab I checked my log files for recurring messages. Thousands there were, from weeks back, everyday error messages about MacKeeper. I couldn't believe. All like this :

Do NOT download or use the ‘MacKeeper uninstaller’ from the Zeobit site, as this will cause even more damage to your operating system.

Thankyou for all the advice. My problem now is how to I empty the trash. Messages such as 'The operation cannot be completed because the item "SharedUtils.dylib" is in use." I cannot find it to delete it though.

Try holding the option key down and selecting "Empty Trash" from the Finder menu.

If that doesn't work, and you are sure you got all the pieces, reboot and see try again.

If that doesn't work, reboot into safe mode (hold the shift key down after the beep) and try again.

I tought I erased everything but little snich keeps warning me that "wants to connect to antitheft.zeobit.com on TCP port 443 (https)". However I can't find anything on the computer related to mackeeper or zeobit....I used easyfind, antivirus, I don't know what to do to get rid of this piece of ****....
