How do I set up WebDAV on the server?

I have a MacMini with Lion Server. I am trying to set up WebDAV to work with my iPad. Is there anywhere I can find a detailed description or manual to do this? I have the user set up correctly and the server is .local. I keep getting "server not found" every time. It appears I am not setting up the server name correctly or not typing it correctly. I selected the "private" setting but I am keeping it local for now without turning on VPN.

If you go into Terminal and enter cd /var/log/apache2/ you'll see the logs. There should be an access_log and an error_log.

Nicki - did you enable the users permission to access the files you want via Finder or CLI? They need permission to access not only from the File Sharing in Server app, but also on the Folder itself...... Just a thought.

Is this a new Lion server? If not, did you migrate or upgrade your SLS to Lion?

I've noticed something else,

I have changed the 'host name' a few times and swapped between all 3 options to see if I can get webdav to work. If I change the host name name to say LOCAL, then I try to change it again a few minutes later, it thinks it is already PRIVATE when it should have been local. It's not happy and I cant find a way to reset or reinstall Lion Server.

The part where you're entering local sounds like a DNS issue. For you to enter an ip address to reach it and not any server_name.local or just server_name.

Correct DNS setup is essential to get it all working correctly. Check out the very helpful stuff from Hoffman Labs with regards to MAC DNS setup: http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436

Anytime you change a configuration in your webdav, you should restart the webserver in Server.app. It seems to be much happier after you do this.

Also check the apache2 logs for errors: /var/log/apache2/

I've managed to get access to a WebDAV server (10.7.2 Lion Server) from a OS X 10.7 Mac by using the GO-->Conect To Server menu in the Finder, and pointing to

http://myserver.com/webdav/usershortname

But that takes me to a home directory for that single user on that machine. Since that server is, well, a server, the shared stuff is all in the SHARED directory which I can't seem to access from the user's home directory.

Oddly, on my iPhone using a WebDav app I can enter this address

http://myserver.com/webdav

When the iphone app requests the usershortname I give it the same shortname as above, but now I am promptly taken, as I would like, to the shared directory where our office's documents are stored. So, it works on the iPhone, not on the Mac. Huh.

Miserable experience... If I wanted something this complicated I would have used an old Win box and set up some stupid Linux or windows sharing service. I really thought this was going to be an Apple experience, but certainly hasn't been. :-(

It took me a while but I think I managed to get mine working in 10.7 Server on a Mac mini.

I turned on web sharing in system preferences then set up file sharing in the server app

and assigned groups to the sharepoints.

Then I created user accounts and added them to the groups

and then I logged into those accounts on the server, to cement their account type.

After that, the accounts are accessible via https://<your-ip>/webdav/ from a Mac and from an iPad. But as somebody else pointed out, you must use the "short name" not hte full user name, to get in.

Windows access works but is a bit flaky, depending on what version of Windows. In W7 just right-click on the "computer" folder in an open window, and choose "add network location" then follow the instructions. But I had to specify a singke folder, such as https://<your-ip>/webdav/thisfolder/ to get it to work.

The slowest part for me was realizing that I needed to use an account that had already logged in on the server as a regular user. And then making sure that the user and group permissions and access lists didn't accidentally lock out a user.

Hope this helps!
