What is the best wireless printer for new iMac w/Lion?

I just bought an iMac (Lion) and now, I need to buy a new printer since my old one is not wireless capable (HP Photosmart C5280 All-in-One). My old G4 is still up and running (using it only for Adobe CS2 until can afford that upgrade) and the printer works fine. However, the iMac will not be in the same place as the G4, so I need a wireless printer.

I would also like the new printer to play nice with a PC laptop (husband's for work) as well as be able to eventually print from an iTouch and iPad.

I may be asking a lot, I know. 😉

I would buy AirPort if I knew it worked with my current printer, which would be great... but from what I've been able to research, that isn't possible with this model. I will eventually end up buying AirPort at some point in the future, but right now a printer is my focus and I would prefer not to buy both right now.

So my question is...what printer would be best for both a Mac and PC without having to buy AirPort also?

Thanks in advance!

After years of inkjet disappointments (thank you HP), I've been rather smitten with Epson's latest generation of printers. The ink capacity is amazing, as is speed, and most significantly the quality. Little things like duplex features, app support, card reader, and wireless scanning are surprisingly appreciated, and I'm quite sure I won't go without any of these features in the future. The size is a bit much, but honestly the footprint isn't much worse than others, and since it delivers results, it's not just dead weight. I've had more than a few printers I couldn't say that about.

For the money, you can't do much better, and my only suggestion would be to see if you can find a similar Epson at a good deal, and go for your best price unless you need every feature (all seem to use similar printing engines).

I have been following this discussion and wanting to buy a new printer since my Epson photo printer died. After continually replacing ink cartridges that didn't seem empty, it finally "alerted" me that whatever was reading the cartridge levels was no longer functioning. Repair was ridiculous. I read reviews and information. What I wanted didn't seem to exist. Some were huge, some had terrible paper loading, some had a very flimsy plastic paper feeder that broke, Epson printers now recognized non Epson ink and wouldn't work. After doing nothing at my wonderful son-in-law and daughter went shopping for a laptop and came home with a printer for me as a Christmas gift. This is a newer version of what they have. It is and HP Photosmart 6520. The footprint is only 17" wide by 16" deep. This 16" includes the touch screen and front paper feed while the printer itself is only 12" front to back. It is wireless and connected immediately. Paper both loads and feeds out the front. You can copy and scan (software provided for scanning) photo paper and copy paper can both be loaded at once with the two front feeds and it prints on 2 sides of the paper very intelligently. Once I copied both sides as it told me to, I made 6 copies without touching a thing. It takes 4 ink cartidges so you don't waste ink. Copies in draft mode looked perfect for B/W printing and even the color photo on my leftover Epson photo paper looked pretty darn good. Printing is faster than expected and I very, very happy. It has an energy star rating and will allow me to print from my SD card. The kids said it didn't have fax (I wouldn't use it anyway) but the box says efax without a phone line. The box also says you can print from your smartphone or tablet. I have not tried these last 2 options. Price? I wasn't going to look....... $149 list, black Friday price was $86.50 at Best Buy. I have a new printer, I didn't have to stress and I highly recommend this as the solution to all I wanted. Hope this helps. (10.6 and 10.7 OS)

I really appreciate the link! That sereies definitely has a little bit of everything I could use, and it appears that the 6500 and 7500 series look comparable, with all the wireless capabilities the 8500 has. Thanks so much for the lead on these.

Don't buy the HP, the software is a continual issue and wireless scanning malfunctions are common

Brother or Canon would be my choice.

I had issues with my HP printer for my Mac Mini, PowerBook and MacBook computers (Pros and now an Air). I switched to using a Canon Pixma IP800 printer about 5 years ago and love it; however, I don't think it's available anymore. I found the Canon printers far supperior to the HP ones, and the Epsons (too noisey for me). I do get updates about a couple times a year, but never more than that.
