What is the best wireless printer for new iMac w/Lion?

I just bought an iMac (Lion) and now, I need to buy a new printer since my old one is not wireless capable (HP Photosmart C5280 All-in-One). My old G4 is still up and running (using it only for Adobe CS2 until can afford that upgrade) and the printer works fine. However, the iMac will not be in the same place as the G4, so I need a wireless printer.

I would also like the new printer to play nice with a PC laptop (husband's for work) as well as be able to eventually print from an iTouch and iPad.

I may be asking a lot, I know. 😉

I would buy AirPort if I knew it worked with my current printer, which would be great... but from what I've been able to research, that isn't possible with this model. I will eventually end up buying AirPort at some point in the future, but right now a printer is my focus and I would prefer not to buy both right now.

So my question is...what printer would be best for both a Mac and PC without having to buy AirPort also?

Thanks in advance!

I have an HP Officejet 6500 E709A. I am so tired of all of the error messages. First, when I try to use the front panel to scan, several times it displays that there are "No Scan Options." It is not Mac's fault (Oh no, or I would not have a Mac) that it is not communicatin with the Mac properly. I do not need color ink, but in order for the darn printer to work, I have to keep the color cartridges in there. So, that's issue number two. Issue number three is that one day it started "Aligning Cartridges." This went on for a couple of months until I had to ask an HP forum expert how to fix it. I cannot get help from HP directly because my printer is no longer under warranty. Isn't that customer service?! So, I do not know why people like HP so much. Get real-- get a Canon or Brother.

HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910

I LOVE this printer =) It has been a great workhorse for me. It will allow for:

Wireless printing

Printing from iDevices (iPad, iPod touch, iPhone)

Printing for OS X 10.5-10.7

Printing from Windows XP-7

Printing from the web!! (you email the files to an address that you get from HP during setup and the file is printed and waiting for you when you get home)

It is a MF printer that also adds Scan and Fax. And you can scan over the network, no need to plug it into your computer.

D0GG...Thanks for such a quick reply!! I will put this printer on my "wish list" for now...it definitely seems like an awesome fit for me, but it's a bit too pricey at this time.

I should've mentioned my budget for a new printer...whoops. So here it is: I'd like to pay no more than $150.00. It doesn't need to have all the bells and whistles, though I do like the options my current printer has...including scan, copy and it prints great pictures, with a separate tray to hold photo paper.

Thanks again!

BE VERY CAREFUL!! I bought a brand ne HP Officeject 7500A last Friday. Apple and HP have sent me a brand ne driver every day since I bought it. I can't get it to work. I even read reviews about it being used on a Mac running Lion. The review was great, but the author wrote abought a hinky problem that was corrected when he downloaded a new driver from Apple.

Now, every time I check for software updates, the Apple updater says I have new software. It is for the Officejet and it's the same version I downloaded early in the day. It's like Apple sends and installs the driver and then can't find it so it says I've got a new driver.

I had similar problems with a Lexmark All-In-One. I finally got the Lexmark to run accetably and got a new driver from Apple. The Lexmark NEVER ran again wirelessly. I found your post because I'm looking for a new printer that ACTUALLY WORKS WITH LION.

I recently bought an Epson Workforce 630 all-in-one printer at the Apple store. It works, but marginally. One of the reasons I bought it was because I scan a lot for the class I teach and I really want to a scan feature that I can adjust. I couldn't access the more sophisticated Scan feature that the printer has and I couldn't find the Epson application in my Applications folder. The only place I could find the file was in the Library. I tried to re-install and to see if I could update the driver (Apple says there is an updated one but Epson doesn't show it and it doesn't come up in Software Update). Epson says since Apple has removed the Rosetta interface, older Epson Scan/Twain drivers will no longer work in Lion. I guess I'm going to take it back. But which printers interface seamlessly with Lion?

Whatever you do - do not by the HP8500. I am about to take a baseball bat to mine and bett the living daylights out of it. I used to have a 6500, reasonably god but slow and woudl not scan when linked to the mac...so I 'upgraded'.

Initially it worked well, quality is good and did everything well ....it still will not scan with the mac but will with every other lap top/PC in my house..but hat did not bother me too much. It is fast and quality is good...UNTIL

- It drinks ink faster than than you can imagine

- you cannot buy non hp replacement cartridges easily and not from Staples of PC World etc

- It sense that ink is running down so keeps sending annoying messages

- if you use a non std cartridge it registers it as empty and send more annoying messages

- the cartridges cost about £50 to replace al four - you can buy a new kodak all in one printer for £55

- it will print perfectly well with non HP or HP remanu cartridges, but still sends the dumb messages

- when using HP catridges it keeps telling you to replace them even though they are not empty and theres plenety of ink (marketing scam)

- This morning, the printer decided that the new (non HP magenta cartridge) that put in yesterday and was quite happy with ...is now empty...it refuse to print even black until i replace that cartridge.

I have no problem buying HP catridges if the price is fine - but the combination of a software blip plus high prices make me seethe. I will destroy this piece of junk and buy myself a Kodak or Brother - but never ever again an HP product - having spent over £3000 on PC/Laptops and printers from these bozos over the last two years they can count me out from next years forecasts

I suggest that anyone looking for any kind of printer go to some of the sites that sell them and read the user reviews.

Amazon has a pretty good list of user reviews and you might find out that something a salesman is trained to sell you, might not be so fabulous after all. I was told by a friend who works for Best Buy in the computer sales department that the HP 8600 A plus was the 'one' to buy, but after reading reviews from people who took the plunge and are not as happy as I would have thought, I'm holding off. Printers shouldn't cost so much money in my honest opinion, because we consumers pay through the nose as it is for paper and ink.

I guess perhaps the trick is to not be so impulsive when choosing. I had to learn that the hard way.

FYI, a follow up..

On the Epson Workforce 630: I tried to sell it so I could buy another printer that would be friendlier to Lion, but nobody wanted it. Finally, I decided to set it up and found out that, in the meantime, a Scan program had been developed for Lion! So, I'm glad I didn't well the 630. The Scan program is adequate and the printer works fine. I even downloaded an app so I am able to print from my I-pad. So, I guess, in answer to what will work with Lion: most printers will, in time.

My Epson Photoprinter was doing the same thing with the ink. I thought I was using ink too fast. After switching out several NEW printers and talking for hours on the phone with Epson people, I found out the ink sensor in the printer was bad. Repair costs? More than a new printer and still no guarantees that other things might go wrong. I did manage to get new ink from Epson for another old (non-photo) printer, as they did have record of all my purchases directly from Epson. That is why I am here looking for a new printer, because I can't print on my new Imac with Lion. Going back and forth to my old PowerPC Mac is insane. I got a new computer because that one was dying.

I have a beef with HP printers and OSX Lion...

Namely that the bottom margins always get cut off. I have three HP printers. Latest drivers. And none of them will print top/bottom margin equal distance at the .25 inch mark since upgrading to Lion (before they all did). Bottom margin ALWAYS gets cropped off.

If I use my windows computer on the same printers -- it works. Not cutting off on the bottom margin.

Seems to be a Lion/Driver issue and it's been over a year with no fix. Worked before Lion with no hitch.

I do a lot of double-sided printing of sheets that fold down the middle (horinztonal fold line) but with HP/Lion those fold lines are now off center of each other by up to a 1/4 inch. Smae files on my canon? perfect.

Frustrating because all three HP printers work perfect otherwise.

I'm posted on their forums but so far no fixes.
