Cue mix setup

First, I apologize for the long email, but I want to make sure I'm thorough. I'm having an issue setting up my cue mix properly.

Externally (outside of Logic), I have channels 3 and 4 of my Fireface 800 routed to the "DAW mix" inserts of my Mackie Big Knob. Then, the Phones/Studio outs of the Big Knob are running to my Behringer mixer in the booth.

Internally (inside Logic), I have the "SENDS" all of the channels I want in the cue mix routed to "SUB1". The "SUB1" channel is routed to channels 3/4.

So, here's the diagram for one channel.....

Channel 1 SEND (SUB1) = SUB1 channel with output 3/4 = Big Knob "DAW mix" input = Phones/Studio outs = Behringer mixer = headphones

My problem...
Basically, the vocalist in the booth hears my monitoring.

When I increase/decrease the Send (SUB1) volume, it gets louder in the headphones (3/4) as well as my monitors (1/2).

When I'm not including a channel in the cue mix (no send to SUB1) it is still heard in the cue mix.

When I mute, solo, or adjust the fader of a channel, the cue mix is impacted.

Someone who has been successful at creating a cue mix with the Big Knob and Logic please help. Thanks!

I'm about at the same point you are, getting all configured for cue mixes...I'm just in the process of hooking up my new Big Knob to the outs of my FW-1884, which I bought specifically for cuemix/talkbalk...The problem I see is, you have connected to the DAW mix inputs rather than the "phones mix" inputs, if I am reading you right....rather than the DAW mix going to your monitors via the Big Knob monitor source selection and the cue mix being routed to the "phones out". You should have output 1/2 as your main mix, going into the DAW mix inputs of the BK, and output 3/4 as your cue mix going to the Phones Mix input.

Sorry if I am not picturing your setup correctly...do you have the source selected as being "phones mix input" or "input sources" for the phones out? When you solo/mute either output 1/2 or output 3/4 what happens?

Also, when you say "Sub" do you mean "bus"? Because if you are just creating subgroubs of channels and sending them to the outs, that could explain it...you want an output bus object, set to 3/4, with the 3/4 output plugged into the "phones mix" of the BK, with the source button in for phones mix, and output 1/2 plugged into DAW mix on the BK. If you want to let the client listen to a playback of the main mix, you just flip the phones source switch to "input sources".

Hope this helps.

Thx Corso....I was posting from work.... a couple of corrections...

My 3/4 outputs from the Fireface 800 is going to the DAW PHONES MIX INPUT of the Big Knob and the Phones Amp is connected to the Behringer mixer.

I meant BUS1 instead of SUB1. I guess I'm a little backward today SUB - BUS.

Here's a thought..... a software program called "TOTAL Mix" came with the FF800. Is there any special routing that needs to occur in that program for my cue mix?

In addition to Corso's good advice, I also use the Mackie Big Knob (great device!) and although I don't use the Fireface, I use the software that comes with my Saffire (and differently, my Rosetta) to get my cue mix separate from Logic's output. I'd bet that's the way to go for you too.

Just route your output via the Fireface software so that you're monitoring the inputs prior to Logic. that way, you'll eliminate most latency issues, and have monitoring for your main outs on 1&2 entirely separate from your cue mixes. You can also send clean audio to Logic, yet put inserts in to your cue mix (reverb, amp modelling whatever) for you or the artists monitoring benefit.

By the way, I found a useful trick with the BK. I use the studio outs back in to my interfaces' ins, to route tracks back into Logic on separate tracks. Great for external hardware processors, and sampling audio from CDs or vinyl. Just remember to deselect DAW mix in, and use 2-Tracks A, B or phono for your main monitoring.

OK, now you've got me a little worried...I am, at this moment, soldering cables to hook up the Big Knob, so my response was just based on logic, no pun intended. I haven't used it yet. If I hook up as I described, with the main outs of the FW-1884 into the DAW mix of the BK, and a cue mix routed to outputs 3/4 of Logic and the FW-1884 into the phones mix of the BK, will I have a problem? I shouldn't, for God's sake, that's the way these things are supposed to work...

Also, will the automatic input monitoring of the track being recorded be present in the cue mix?

Is there a way to get effects on a cue track "in the box"?

Sorry, Ambrose, but I think we both showed up looking for the same information.
