Cannot load Flash Player

Adobe Flash Player 10 has mysteriously disappeared from my G4 Powerbook running 10.4.11. There was a similar query by notanthony123 on April 13, 2011, (Adobe Flash Player for OSX 10.4.11) with a number of responses. I have tried all the suggestions from that discussion. In all attempts to install Flash Player 10 I am left only with a Flash Player alias. When I tried to install Flash Payer 9, I was told “You cannot continue. There is nothing to install.” I have searched my hard drive and can find no Flash Player program, only aliases.

I would very much appreciate any help, as I don’t know what to try next.

Thank you

Ted Stampfer

Hi Ted,

Could be many things, we should start with this...

"Try Disk Utility

1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.

2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)

Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.

3. Click the First Aid tab.

4. Select your Mac OS X volume.

5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/865/cpsid_86551.html#prob1=uninst,os=m10.6,

Download this if you haven't...

http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/installers/archive/fp10.1.102.6 4_and_9.0.289.0archive.zip

Once downloaded if it doesn't unzip automatically the double click on that file.

Look for the fp10.1.102.64_and_9.0.289.0archive folder, open it, look for the Flash Player 10.1.102.64 folder & open and look for 101r10264 folder & open it, double click on the flashplayer101r102_64_ubmac.dmg file, choose the Install Adobe Flash Player file to install... they don't make it easy!

Or smaller here...

Stand alone player...

Or free 3rd party...

Thank you very much for sticking with me. I guess I will just have to use Firefox, at least if I want the benefits of Flash Player.

I did verify that you can still find older versions here http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html about half way down the page are links to:

(Released 11/04/2010) User uploaded fileFlash Player 10.1.102.64 and 9.0.289.0 (126 MB)

and

User uploaded fileFlash Player 10.1 (81.7 MB)

which have been provided before, but I wasn't able to get them to work without going to that first site.

They are big downloads and way more than you need, but it would seem to be the only trusted site where you can find them.

“uninstall_flash_player_osx.dmg” and checked to see that itwas really gone from Safari and Firefox.

Downloaded and opened

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266/images/download.gifFlash Player 10.1.102.64 and 9.0.289.0 (126 MB)

and ran

flashplayer10_1r102_64_ub_mac.dmg.

Afterwards Firefox recognized Flash Player 10.1, Safari did not.

Repeated uninstall procedure and downloaded and opened

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266/images/download.gifFlash Player 10.1 (81.7 MB)

and ran

flashplayer10_1r82_76_ub_mac.dmg

Again the results showed Firefox was good, Safari not.

These results are the same as previously-the installationprocedures are fine but Safari refuses to recognize Flash Player 10.1. As Ihave already reinstalled Safari it would appear that the next step is do to aclean install, hopefully of OS 5. Apple seems to have given up on us non-Intel mac-personsand doesn’t even make 10.5 discs anymore. I feel Apple has let us down similarto when they stopped offering new operating systems by download, OS 7 and 8, ifI remember correctly. I would have said 6 but I have a stack of OS 6 floppies. That I can now understand because downloading OS 9 on a slow dialup connectionwould not be practical.

Sorry for my tirade. The help I have gotten from all of you, andthe things I have learned in this discussion, makes up for my disappointment. Pleasekeep up the good work.

As you may recall, Firefox has it's own Flash Player. Did it recognize that you had updated to 10.1.102.64?

Last time I checked you could still call them at the 800 number and order it, but you are correct that you won't find it in stores nor listed on-line.

Even though Adobe has made it's installer quite complicated, when all is said and done they simply install two files in /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ called "flashplayer.xpt" and "Flash Player.plugin". When I copy and paste the following into a Terminal application dialog:

cd '/Library/Internet Plug-Ins'; ls -l

I get the following for those two files:

-rw-rw-r-- 1 root admin 856 Oct 21 2010 flashplayer.xpt

drwxrwxr-x 3 root admin 102 Aug 14 02:41 Flash Player.plugin

If that's close to what you get then there's a good chance that it's been properly installed and something else is wrong.

When I did as you suggest I got a number of lines two of which are:

-rw-rw-r-- 1 root admin 856 Jul 28 2010 flashplayer.xpt

drwxrwxr-x 3 root admin 102 Aug 25 15:32 FlashPlayer.plugin

The only difference between these and your examples are thedates and times, which I don’t imagine matter. If that is so, the problem is solved; I have a screwed up computer. It is a nuisance but I will have to use Firefox more, at least until I do a clean install of 10.5, or purchase a newmac, Intel of course.

Once again thank you all. It has been an educationalexperience for me and not the first time I have taken advantage of all you goodpeople at Apple Support communities.

Thanks again

Just read this which may be a different issue, but might work. Certainly easier than reinstalling the OS.
