iTunes Store Won't Load, Won't Show Error Message

Alright--I've worked my way out of messy computer problems before, but this one's got me pretty well stumped. I mean, even for a PC using Apple products this is a bit ridiculous.

When I open up iTunes, all of the media works just fine, but when I try to navigate to the Store, the white "iTunes Store" page comes up (which I know it does while loading), and the loading bar locks up about halfway through "Accessing iTunes Store" without showing any error messages of any kind. Obviously, refreshing the page does nothing, and neither does opening it up in a separate window. iTunes allows me to sign in, and to view and edit my account/billing information, but even from there I can't worm my way into the Store (via the black menu bar atop the page). Before you say anything, YES my internet is working--hence the online discussion post, so I don't even want to hear it. And I know it isn't the actual store because I can access it on another computer.

I've had this problem for at least a week...possibly since I updated iTunes, but I can't say for sure, so I'm not about to assume there was something faulty in the update.

I found out that the Apple Mobile Device essentially murders my processor (the CPU was maxing out at 100% whenever the program ran, and it was slowing the entire computer down significantly), so I shut that down to see if iTunes was just freezing up under CPU stress like the rest of my computer. While other programs went back to functioning at normal speed, the Store still wouldn't load.

My OS is Windows 7 64-bit.

I have the latest version of iTunes 64-bit.

As far as I can tell I don't have any firewalls or bizarre security problems that are blocking access to the site.

I've tried removing iTunes from my computer and downloading the most recent--and supposedly the most compatible--version.

Admittedly, iTunes never really worked properly on my laptop--syncing, for instance, will take an ungodly amount of time and then crash, resulting in a wiped iPod that needs to take an hour to reload everything--but this is new.

I don't suppose there could be any consistent compatibility problems with running iTunes in a 64-bit OS?

I've read on some of these discussion threads that even in iTunes 64-bit a goodly amount of the programs are still 32-bit, including iTunes itself, and when I run the 64-bit version of iTunes, TM shows itunes.exe 32 gearing the program.

Sometimes problems that are this particular can result from removing important files or programs from the computer, not realizing what part they had in other programs. The only iTunes-related program I've ever deleted was Bonjour, and from the sounds of it, Bonjour doesn't (or at least shouldn't) affect the funcionality of iTunes at all, so I've ruled that out, too.

So I've exhausted my personal knowledge of what could possibly be the problem.

Either it's something simple and I'm just overcomplicating it (which happens a lot to me, actually), or it's one of those quirky, untraceable issues that exist for the sole purpose of inconveniencing people, in which case, C'est la Vie.

I'm not so much concerned with the fact that I can't access the Store as I am with the fact that I simply cannot figure this one out.

It vexes me.

Any input is welcome--I'm way open to suggestions. I figured I'd try discussions before calling Support, just in case it is something trivial.

I wanted to tag this discussion, but the Powers That Be wouldn't have it. 😐

Look into what security software you are running and disable it and also go to apple.com/support and search for

itunes store connection issues by actually typing that into the bar next to support then scroll down to one of the TS articles and begin a jounrey of internet explorer configuration.

I have done the looking for you all:

mike185, I have come across many responses from you on this forum and I know you must be a good guy and mean well. I am just puzzled by your recent comments about the problem with accessing the itunes store. I think most of us do know how to use an antivirus program and since it was Apple's update that caused the problem in the first place, it is their job to provide a solution which they failed to do. Someone else posted the solution here and it simply worked for most of us. You would think Apple support people would share that solution on their troubleshoot site rather make us go hunting for it in these forums. Just my thoughts.

What is truly sad is the fact that the articles I posted to you

are from the support site at apple.com they are easy to find

if you are willing to read it is all there. All of the settings for

Internet explorer and other system settings that can affect

not just iTunes but other things line online games or other

types of services. You say Apple did not provide enough info

on the support = you being lazy and also the update did not

cause anything this is a preexisting condition that just now

got brouhgt to the surface. For example you now have the

cloud based type of services along with all iTunes store

purchases being redownloadable. these require a good connection

along comes Norton Internet security or gasp the dreaded McAfee,

which is a system strangler in terms of connections and resources.

Not to mention the fact that it is possible in any case of a security

Program to add exceptions to it for any program so it is not

Interfered with.

Thanks Mike, but this is an awful lot more work than the solution I found here.

As for anitvirus, have been running it for 18mnths, no problems. Just upgraded to 10.5 and couldn't access store.

The solution here was simple enough for my simple mind. I have no time or desire to learn how an antivirus programme works, and these days, one shouldn't have to. It should just all come together

thanks anyway, my problem was fixed so easily without having to understand all the tech stuff on the apple site.

cheers

Thank you edgravel! I tried everything and it took me hours to read through all the suggestions before I found your solution. This did the trick, but I feel sorry for the people who don't have the tenacity to dig deep to find the answers to their iTunes problems.

Start --> Programs --> Accessories (Right Click on Command Prompt) --> Run as Administrator

then type in:

Netsh winsock reset

Hit enter, restart PC, open iTunes, go to Store

I have tried everything here and while one or two of the solutions help (i.e., I can actually load the Store) they are all temporary and not permanent. I have to use one of these solutions every time I want to open the store. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate and Itunes 10.5

I have an iPad and an iPhone. If I had something else I'd ditch iTunes altogether. There are other places I can get my music. The fact that Apple absolutely refuses to come up with a permanent fix for this problem totally amazes me. The fact that they do not even acknowledge it is a problem - with so many people complaining - baffles me and frustrates me to no end. This has been going on far too long. I hope Apple is losing a lot of money because I know they are losing a lot of paying customers.

Same here, and I've been messing with this for 4 days - uninstalling, reinstalling, over and over and over and I'm sick of it. I have gotten the itunes store only half loaded and the bar stops. No error message, nothing - just stops.

After reading the 'fix' about the command line, I did that and VOILA! It worked. I was elated! But it was short-lived, because after closing iTunes, the same thing happened when I tried to open the store again. This time the command line didn't work, and I'm back to square one.

If the dang iTunes STORE isn't going to open for Windows 7 64 bit users, then Apple needs to quit pretending it's an individual's issue with their internet connection, etc. I think TOO MANY users who are unable to resolve the iTunes STORE issue, trying all the troubleshooting 'fixes' we can find - with no resolution - then Apple needs to come clean and admit they're the one with the problem.

I had the same problem and here is what I did after reading most of the posts in this forum. I created the following batch file and saved it to my desktop as itunesfix.bat.

echo off

cd /d c:\

ipconfig /flushdns

netsh winsock reset

cd program files

cd itunes

itunes.exe

Then, i went to the iTunes icon on my desktop, opened its properties, and changed the target to: C:\Users\K-Dawg\Desktop\itunesfix.bat

Change the user K-Dawg to your user name, if any, and the location (Desktop) to where you have the batch file.

Now any time you click on the desktop iTunes icon it will first run the batch file (it's quick) and then open iTunes and the store will be available. When you run the batch file it will say that you have to reboot. I don't and it works just fine without rebooting.

Not pretty by any means and I'm sure it can be improved upon - but it works for me. I know the frustration and I can not for the life of me understand why Apple doesn't come up with a permanent fix. Anyway, this is what I did. Hope it helps.
