iTunes Store Won't Load, Won't Show Error Message

Alright--I've worked my way out of messy computer problems before, but this one's got me pretty well stumped. I mean, even for a PC using Apple products this is a bit ridiculous.

When I open up iTunes, all of the media works just fine, but when I try to navigate to the Store, the white "iTunes Store" page comes up (which I know it does while loading), and the loading bar locks up about halfway through "Accessing iTunes Store" without showing any error messages of any kind. Obviously, refreshing the page does nothing, and neither does opening it up in a separate window. iTunes allows me to sign in, and to view and edit my account/billing information, but even from there I can't worm my way into the Store (via the black menu bar atop the page). Before you say anything, YES my internet is working--hence the online discussion post, so I don't even want to hear it. And I know it isn't the actual store because I can access it on another computer.

I've had this problem for at least a week...possibly since I updated iTunes, but I can't say for sure, so I'm not about to assume there was something faulty in the update.

I found out that the Apple Mobile Device essentially murders my processor (the CPU was maxing out at 100% whenever the program ran, and it was slowing the entire computer down significantly), so I shut that down to see if iTunes was just freezing up under CPU stress like the rest of my computer. While other programs went back to functioning at normal speed, the Store still wouldn't load.

My OS is Windows 7 64-bit.

I have the latest version of iTunes 64-bit.

As far as I can tell I don't have any firewalls or bizarre security problems that are blocking access to the site.

I've tried removing iTunes from my computer and downloading the most recent--and supposedly the most compatible--version.

Admittedly, iTunes never really worked properly on my laptop--syncing, for instance, will take an ungodly amount of time and then crash, resulting in a wiped iPod that needs to take an hour to reload everything--but this is new.

I don't suppose there could be any consistent compatibility problems with running iTunes in a 64-bit OS?

I've read on some of these discussion threads that even in iTunes 64-bit a goodly amount of the programs are still 32-bit, including iTunes itself, and when I run the 64-bit version of iTunes, TM shows itunes.exe 32 gearing the program.

Sometimes problems that are this particular can result from removing important files or programs from the computer, not realizing what part they had in other programs. The only iTunes-related program I've ever deleted was Bonjour, and from the sounds of it, Bonjour doesn't (or at least shouldn't) affect the funcionality of iTunes at all, so I've ruled that out, too.

So I've exhausted my personal knowledge of what could possibly be the problem.

Either it's something simple and I'm just overcomplicating it (which happens a lot to me, actually), or it's one of those quirky, untraceable issues that exist for the sole purpose of inconveniencing people, in which case, C'est la Vie.

I'm not so much concerned with the fact that I can't access the Store as I am with the fact that I simply cannot figure this one out.

It vexes me.

Any input is welcome--I'm way open to suggestions. I figured I'd try discussions before calling Support, just in case it is something trivial.

I wanted to tag this discussion, but the Powers That Be wouldn't have it. 😐

Kellllllbell,

I did that, as I said in my original comment, and it worked ONE time. I was thrilled! But the next time I opened iTunes, it was back to the same blank page with only half the bar loaded for iTunes Store. So I tried it again and it DIDN'T work the second time.

Now this is the really weird part - I've read a gazillion posts about many 'fixes' and NONE of them worked EXCEPT that particular one, but it ONLY worked one time and it never would again. As many times as I clicked on my shortcut to iTunes, the store wouldn't load, so I'd do the whole command thing again - still the white page and only 1/2 of the bar loaded.

The weird part? I deleted (AGAIN) so many more Apple files in various folders, then went to my Program Files (x86) AGAIN, opened the iTunes FOLDER, (which showed the 2-8-12 date of my last fresh install) and saw that the iTunes.exe file INSIDE that folder had an earlier date (1-16-12). I clicked on it and the store opened! Was afraid to close it for fear it wouldn't open again the next time, but it did! And it IS the latest update (10.5.3.3)

So I deleted the iTunes shortcut from my desktop, which my 2-8-12 download added to my desktop, and pinned the 1-16-12 iTunes.exe to my Start menu, and dang if it hasn't worked several times this evening when I closed iTunes and then opened it again that way!

I hope that everyone gets their issue resolved. I know that each of the last several times I've updated iTunes I had to go through all the headaches before I finally found a solution. I think I will just never update it again!

Hello,

You mentioned in your post that mobile me was maxing out your cpu. I checked mine and after disable it went from 59% cpu to 6%. Can you tell me the easiest way to use Itunes after you disable mobileme? Is it to just go into services again and enable mobilme?

Also how did you fix your initial Itunes problem?

My fix was "run as administrator in Itunes". Which was weird because Itunes stopped wroking for me after I changed my Internet Security software so I thought it was blocking ITunes. No where in Itunes help did I find trying "Run as administrator". I am going to suggest it to them after this.

God Bless,

Al

It seemed like most people had found the solution to the latest iTunes update with the "Netsh" fix, so I hadn't been back to the thread in several days. The "Netsh" fix worked for me ONE time, but I always had to shut iTunes down in Task Manager or it wouldn't close. Then when I opened iTunes again, I couldn't get the store - blank page, the bar half loaded. Over and Over again I tried every fix, uninstalled, installed, again and again. The"Netsh" fix only occasionally worked - and ONLY ONE time after applying it.

I am running Windows 7, Service Pack 1, 64 Bit, and I use Firefox as my default browser. A week or so ago, I finally got so fed up with uninstalling and reinstalling everything through Control Panel Programs and Features, once again I uninstalled every Apple program, iTunes, and Quicktime through Control Panel, and then went to folders that don't get uninstalled (my user App Data, Program Files, Program Files (x86), and Program Data). I DELETED ALL the Apple or iTunes folders. I wiped my pc clean of anything Apple-related. (My music files were in separate folders, so I didn't lose them) Then I did a clean install of iTunes 10.4.1.10 64 bit - it includes Quicktime.

Once installed, iTunes asked if I wanted my music files added. Everything has been great - I don't have to use Task Manager to quit, I can open iTunes store every single time I want to. It is the ONLY fix I have found that has worked without a glitch since the dreaded iTunes 10.5 update several weeks ago.

Drastic? Yes, and scary to manually delete a jillion folders and files, but it worked for me. The ONLY thing that has for any period of time.

I am having the same issue. I am a computer consultant and don't get stuck very often, but this is one of those times, and there is nothing you can do until Apple fixes this issue! I can access my iTunes account everywhere except in iTunes. Whenever I try to do anything that requires me to sign into my account, it just sits there and says "Accessing iTunes Store". I have done EVERYTHING including, removing and re-installing iTunes, Adobe Flash, my Music folder's files for iTunes and just about everything you can think of. I have even wiped my workbench computer and re-built it from scratch with clean software and it still does the same thing. So for all of you out there having this problem, I don't think it's you, it's Apple! It seemd to work fine a month ago before the update just before v 10.6 came out (10.5?). Ever since then it has been doing the same thing. I just bought a new iPad, and can't put any content on it from my computer at all because it requires you to sign into your account, and guess what? You Can't! The cloud works fine, but I have stuff that will only work by syncing like movies, music and books, plus I can't save content from my devices to my computer. I have been a loyal iPhone and iPad customer, but I am beginning to lose my confidence in Apple and more importantly getting REALLY annoyed that I can't use my iPhone or iPad fully due to iTunes.

Come on Apple. Get your S%$T together and get this fixed!

Scooter, see my post just above yours. I finally had to remove everything and start over with Version 10.4. I couldn't even get 10.5 to open the store.

Anyway, good luck to you. I will never update iTunes again - it's not worth the headache. 10.4 works just fine for me on Windows 7, 64 bit, Service Pack 1. 10.5 didn't work for me, and a friend told me NOT TO EVEN TRY VERSION 10.6!

i was thinking of getting an ipad and changing to an iphone but with this level of service...HHHMMMM

enough ranting, now feel better

I have also had the white screen Itunes problem. Some need to just right click on the Itunes icon and select run as administrator.

To the rest save your self a million solutions and blogs and uninstall your security software, don't disable it because it will still effect Itunes, uninstall it completely. You can leave on windows firewall, it will not cause any Itunes problems.

After you uninstall it restart your computer and then uninstall Itunes also.

Reinstall Itunes and you will find all is ok, no matter if it's the newest version or an older version of ITunes. Security software blocks a lot of stuff including ITunes. Now you contact your security software support and ask what modifications need to be made.

Down the road when Apple releases a new version and it acts up repeat this fix. Future ITunes updates will not be a headache anymore. Apple cannott possibly make their updates work with every different security software product so this problem will continue to pop up but the headaches do not have to continue.

And don't believe anyone saying its your poor dsl connection or anything like that. If you can go online and the speed seems fine, your connection is working it's not the problem. I had dsl for years and now have Verizon FiOS. Verizon FiOS is absolutely the best broadband connection available hands down but a properly working Verizon dsl is also excellent and much cheaper than the competitors. If your dsl is acting up insist Verizon send out a tech to do a homerun with a splitter. This will give you a dedicated dsl jack and the splitter sends the internet connection only to the dedicated jack not the rest of the house. Microfilters will not be needed anymore and you get a much better connection with the filters removed. In fact, even if you have no problems, insist on Verizon installing the splitter anyway, it will give you the speed you are paying for and the reliability you deserve.

Thank you kdan423!

Your suggestion for using the batch file worked PERFECTLY! 😀 I tried everything else, the command prompt, run as admin, editing the hosts file, but nothing worked and yours worked quickly. Though I keep getting the command prompt thing pop up, its fine. I only use that method when I need the Itunes Store. 😀 Thank you! Guys, if you're having the same problem, follow kdan's suggestion which was as follows:

create a batch file (using notepad) that includes

echo off

cd /d c:\

ipconfig /flushdns

netsh winsock reset

cd program files

cd itunes

itunes.exe

"Then, i went to the iTunes icon on my desktop, opened its properties, and changed the target to: C:\Users\K-Dawg\Desktop\itunesfix.bat

Change the user K-Dawg to your user name, if any, and the location (Desktop) to where you have the batch file." - kdan423
