Can I do WPA in 10.4.11 iBook PPC?

Folks:

I've been playing around with trying to get a partition in my iBook PPC to run a flavor of linux, and it's been OK except I'm having problems getting the wireless to work. Finally got the home wireless to show up today, but it couldn't find the IP address for it. The list moderator suggested that I need to use WPA-PSK (TKIP) and right now the router is set up for WEP and there isn't any key offered on my network manager for WPA if I wanted to just click on WPA. I guess I would have to call Verizon to get them to set up a WPA key for me?? Also, when I tried to set up a network on my iBook in the 10.4.11 partition all I could see was a place for a WEP password, nothing showed any other options. Can I access WPA encryption from my PPC devices running Tiger? I wouldn't want to change my encryption just to get the Linux side going when I'm mostly still happy with Tiger. How could I get the WPA options to show up in OSX so I can see whether I could still connect to them? Many thanks.

What is the b/g/n setting on your router? Have you tried b/g/n?

I've basically given up here – I'm convinced that with n enabled on the router, no security method will work with this PPC/Powerbook on 10.4.11. (I've upgraded my router's firmware, updated Airport Utility on the PB, and tried every conceivable combo of WPA/WPA2/TKIP/AES.)

It connects with no security enabled, and it connects when router is set to b/g mixed. I'm trying to figure out why with no security in N mode it works, if the sheer fact that it's set to b/g/n is supposedly a problem.

PPC connects to my Router using b/g/n/WPA2 fine, (Clearwire Modem/Router), but will not connect to Mac Pro setup for b/g/n WPA2, as a side note 10.3.9 could not connect to the same Modem using WPA2, except using Mixed WPA/WPA2 mixed TKIP/AES worked fine for 10.3.9 though.

I suspect your Router is expecting the password in n mode or some such thing... there was a big problem with PPC Macs trying to connect Apple's n routers & crashing or freezing, unless a Guest b/g network was setup.

I've had a similar problem with an iBook G3 (600 MHz) running OS X 10.4.11. I just configured a new router (NetGear WNR834B v2, a b/g/n router) and set it up to use the same SSID as the thing it was replacing (a Linksys WRT54G), but instead of WEP, I configured WPA2-PSK [AES]. The iBook would not connect. I changed the SSID to be a new name and still the same results. Used WPA-PSK (TKIP), but again the same result. The warning window presented in all cases was "There was an error joining the AirPort network" (the name of the SSID was also included). I even removed the original SSID from my keychain. My router has no ability to choose b/g or b/g/n, nor a guest network option. Changing the router back to WEP and then using the same SSID & pass phrase that was used on my Linksys resulted in a valid connection on the iBook (nor did I need to reenter the generated key (which results from the pass phrase). Is is almost as if OS X 10.4.11 did not really forget the original network/SSID credential, but clearly it has a problem with any WPA or WPA2 authentication. I would be great if it worked with WPA2, but that seems unlikely.

Having a bout of that on an iBook G3 10.3.9 lately, I'm starting to believe the problem is likely that G3s cannot do WPA2 encryption, possibly that part of the drivers is G4 & up only, needing maybe Altivec since it's CPU intensive. Strange part is WPA2 was offered with the built-in Airport card, so I could be very wrong on that.
