Wi-Fi: No hardware installed

Since I've installed Lion on my MacBook Pro, I've had one problem after another. The latest problem is this: I can't turn on Airport. When I click on the Airport icon on the top right of the menu-bar, it reads: "Wi-Fi: No hardware installed."

Has anybody else had this problem?

Hello troubled people. I too have had this problem since January of 2012. The only solution that is full proof to work is to find a USB wifi adapter that supports Mac OS X. The tricky part is a lot of them don't come out say they do so read in the user reviews and see if people have found the right drivers.

This solutions ***** because it's not like Apple's Macbook line, especially the Air models, have a plethora of USB ports.

This a less than $10 solution plus the site has a great track record. I've been using this one for over a year now.

What helped me is to reinstall OSX using recovery-mode (hold command + R, while starting-up). In recovery mode, WiFi works, already indicating it's asoftware problem, and not a faulty WiFi card. Re-install OSX. All your data and program files will not be affected.

As OSX is downloaded from the internet, it may take a couple of hours until it's all done.

Start-up your macbook normally, and WiFi re-appears.

For now, my Macbook has worked flawlessly again for 2 weeks. I haven't seen the problem return so far.

Apparently some WiFi related files got corrupted during 2 years of intense and trouble free use.

I've got this problem too - my solution is to remove the Wi-Fi option from the list in Network in System Preferences and then shut down. Reset the PRAM and SMC and then I can add the Wi-Fi again in Network and it works. But quite why it is so temperamental and also why so many people are affected is a pretty poor state of affairs. There is talk that Mavericks fixes this, but many of us have software - Avid Media Composer in my case - that isn't yet supported by Mavericks.

Is there a way that a third-party working Wi-Fi USB adapter (such as the Edimax EW-7822UAC) will be recognised by my Mac Pro 1,1 (which didn't originally come with Wi-Fi), so that the 802.11ac connection will be perceived as Wi-Fi and enable the appearance of the AirPort icon on the menu bar? I'm running Mavericks 10.9.2 if that's significant and the adapter works fine using the drivers it provides, but, alas, no actual integration with OS X itself. For instance, Mavericks Maps still has no idea of the computer's physical whereabouts.

This problem was an absolute nightmare for me. Have a 4 year old white macbook which worked perfectly except this fault, rendering it pretty useless.

Phoned around 20 different places and in the end I managed to buy a dongle that works perfectly on the latest version of iOS Maverick 10.9.2 for £10.

It is a Dynamode and the model number is WL-700N-RA
