Software update Snow Leopard 10.6.8 can't check for updates

Tried checking for software updates in Snow Leopard and the progress bar won't get past about 5%, even after an hour (see pic). The bar starts at this point and doesn't move any further. Thought it might be server trouble, so tried again a week later, same story.

Any ideas?

try this:

try trashing this preference file com.apple.softwareupdate.plist

there are a few:

one in your home folder/library/preferences

also in user/Library/Preferences/ByHost subfolder

another in the /library/preferences

now restart your Mac.

when done, try running software update again.

Hi Susan.new

I don't think so. I'm not entirely sure how my issue got resolved, but my suspicion is that my ADSL line was behaving intermittently (data packets transferred frequently enough to make OSX still check for updates, but not frequently enough to read the updates).

Also bear in mind that you won't recieve any more updates for OSX after 10.6.8. You may for other things like iPhoto, etc. but OSX has moved on from 10.6.8

Try and get to a more stable connection and try again. I updated this week and all was fine.
