No audio in FaceTime?

Friend with a new iMac called me on iChat today about a problem he was having. We audio chatted, shared screens, etc., and had no problems communicating. Tonight, he called via Facetime. Picture both ways was fine, but while I could hear him, he couldn't hear me.

I have an iMac 27" quad i7 running 10.7.1. Sound prefs on my end shows that the internal mic is registering sound, and I was able to record my voice in Garageband.

Is there any reason why audio would work fine in iChat but not in FaceTime?

Thanks!

OK so I had the same issue as the OP. Mic was working in all other apps and even worked fine in Audio only calls in FaceTime. The issue turned out to be a miss match of operating frequency from the Audio Device to what the application is expecting.

SOLUTION:

Go to Utilities and open Audio MIDI Setup.

Go to Window and select Show Audio Devices

Select Built in Microphone and make sure the format is set to 48000.0Hz 2ch-24bit Integer.

Mine was previously set to 44000.0Hz and the application is expecting a 48000.0Hz input. :-) Now the microphone works perfectly and all parties can hear the audio signal.

Hope this helps others.

Really thats the first time I heard of problems with FT between iPads I thought the problem was between anything thing comunicating with a Macbook or iMac. I still use FT on my macbook pro some times have long conversations without issue. But when it does start to act up I defituntly do have to re-start it not just call back but quit and restart FT, and when it does act up a second or thrid time I call my wife back with my iPod to her iPad 3gen and have never had an issue with those two acting up. Maybe it is that the software on the 2g iPad is not up to date.

Loss of audio on FaceTime.....add me to the list!!!!

I'm using an iPad 2 (all up to date) and my mum is using an iPad 3 (also all up to date).

iPad 2 (me) can hear and see, and iPad 3 (mum) can only see....no audio.

I had used FaceTime before successfully, with an iPod touch.

So basically my story goes: first time I tried FT with the iPad 3 they had no audio, only video. I tried rebooting both iPads, signing out, signing in, checking setting etc. Still no audio on iPad 3.

Took both iPads into the apple store, and at first they thought the problem was with the iPad 3, so replaced it as it was only a week old. They set it up in store and viola.....still no audio.

So they then thought the problem was with the iPad 2, and they exchanged that.

Tested it in store and it worked fine.

Got home and managed to FT twice.

On the third time the audio was cutting in and out on the iPad 3, and the video was freezing and juddering, and what audio did come out was eratic and delayed by over a minute.

We ended the FaceTime, and rebooted our iPads.

When we tried to FT after doing this the audio had gone completely on the iPad 3, but the video was fine, not freezing or juddering. iPad 2 was seeing video and hearing audio ok.

So......I'm going to take my iPad 2 back into the store this weekend and see what they suggest.

They were astounded at the problem in the first place so going back will be interesting!!!!

As for denying the problem, I think it's about time apple got this sorted, as I can see from threads and posts that this has been going on a **** of a long time now!!!

I will update accordingly!!!

Hi,

Which bit of this refers to FaceTime on a Mac ?

Technically the iOS version and the Mac Version are different but compatible apps.

I know about the Mac but less about the iOS set up.

Did you need this post moved to the iPad Area ?

It still stems from the same issue. I have a brand spanking new 15" retina and a 17" mac book pro on lion(8months old), a snow leapord, 2 touches and an iphone4. THEY ALL have this issue. There should be one big discussion about just facetime. So its not so compartmentalized. Mind you I tried every suggestion given to me, on every device. Lately Touch and iphone to retina works. Retina ML to 17" L fails audio.

Ok. (Momunkan and Lemonie)

Do you happen to know which and how the ports needed for FaceTime are opened or allowed in your routers ?

A device doing UPnP (Or a Base Station doing Port Mapping Protocol) should have no problems.

There is this Article to help.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4245

Some of these are the same as the Original iChat ones (The Addition of 3478 through 3497 (UDP) is the difference)

For FaceTime on the Macs I would check the Microphone selection in the App (Video Menu) and the Chosen device in System Preference > Sound > Input match.

You may need to turn the volume up in System Preferences (This has been an issue in iChat)

I have the exact same issue as you Lemonie. I have an iPad 2 with iOS 5.1.1, I tried to FT my friend last night - he has an iPad 3 with iOS 5.1.1. I could see and hear him perfectly, he had video but just a buzzing with audio. He bought his iPad 3 yesterday so was very upset! I would be very interested to hear how you get on with troubleshooting this problem.

Hi ElmonWizzle, I'm glad to hear its not just me!!!

Well I went back into the store, and they nearly fell over when they saw me.

Now, as my iPad 2 did work (both audio and video at both ends), then didn't work (no audio on the iPad 3), even after exchanging it, they're saying the problem is defo with the iPad 2.

They said they thought it was a software problem as it had worked. They're advice was to back up the iPad 2, and reset it back to day one. Then they said I should set it up as a brand new iPad. When it's back on to plug it into my mac, and in iTunes to add the apps there. I did ask if they they thought maybe one of my apps was conflicting with FT and they said yes, maybe. But the only way to see if it's an app is to add each one, one at a time and try to FT after adding each one.....!!!!!

So....what I'm going to do (prob when I get back from my hols now) is to reset it, and when it's back on try and FT before adding ANY apps. If it works then I'll have to add the apps one at a time, testing FT as I go, to see if any app causes the problem.

If not.....well I dunno really. I've done all the port forwarding things so it's not my firewall etc.

If you do have any luck ElmonWizzle, whether by the method above, or any other, please let me know!!!!
