No audio in FaceTime?

Friend with a new iMac called me on iChat today about a problem he was having. We audio chatted, shared screens, etc., and had no problems communicating. Tonight, he called via Facetime. Picture both ways was fine, but while I could hear him, he couldn't hear me.

I have an iMac 27" quad i7 running 10.7.1. Sound prefs on my end shows that the internal mic is registering sound, and I was able to record my voice in Garageband.

Is there any reason why audio would work fine in iChat but not in FaceTime?

Thanks!

OK so I had the same issue as the OP. Mic was working in all other apps and even worked fine in Audio only calls in FaceTime. The issue turned out to be a miss match of operating frequency from the Audio Device to what the application is expecting.

SOLUTION:

Go to Utilities and open Audio MIDI Setup.

Go to Window and select Show Audio Devices

Select Built in Microphone and make sure the format is set to 48000.0Hz 2ch-24bit Integer.

Mine was previously set to 44000.0Hz and the application is expecting a 48000.0Hz input. :-) Now the microphone works perfectly and all parties can hear the audio signal.

Hope this helps others.

WEll, I am thrilled! I followed the advice of a forum member and fixed my problem. I feel like a freakin Genius!

I accomplished this 1/2 hr before my Apple Genius appt. I discovered my phone speaker did not work also. So a member said in a post he"cleaned " the hole on top of the body so I took a needle and stuck it in the very little hole. Magically I was able to be heard on FaceTime and my speaker on the phone. I imagined them taking my beloved phone and sending it to an unknown Apple grove. This is my only phone so I was getting ready to panic.

THank you FORUM you rock!!

OH.MY.WORD!!!!!!!

Ok an unexpected update!!!!

Yesterday my dad bought an iPad 3, exactly same spec as my mum. When he got home he tried to FT me, and guess what........it worked!!!! At times I appeared juddery to him, then the video became smooth again.

So......we ended the FT and I tried to FT my mum.....ya know.....just in case.......and it worked!!!!!

We had a 10 min FT and it was fine throughout!!!! Shocked and stunned to say the least!!!!!

Today we tried again just in case it was a fluke, and no, it worked perfectly again!!!! Now, the only thing I've done recently is double check the ports. In fact I deleted the settings and re-did them so to speak. And touch wood, it's working fine now!!!!

My advice therefore is to deleted and forward your ports again!!!! Who knows...........

HI,

My advice therefore is to deleted and forward your ports again!!!! Who knows...........

If we are talking about Port Forwarding in a router then in most set up you have to list the ports and the IP to which the data will be passed on to (Computer or iPhone or iPad).

In most routers this is only to one IP so in cases like iMessages being sent from a Mac or iPhone or iPad (or FaceTime) can only then work on the one device that has the Port Forwarding Pointing to them.

The second issue with this is the computer or iOS device has to keep the same IP with the router.

With several phones coming and going from the house or a Mac that is turned Off for long periods means that if the router is still doing DHCP that the IPs of every device can change now and then.

That is why I posted :-

Do you happen to know which and how the ports needed for FaceTime are opened or allowed in your routers ?

A device doing UPnP (Or a Base Station doing Port Mapping Protocol) should have no problems.

There is this Article to help.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4245

Some of these are the same as the Original iChat ones (The Addition of 3478 through 3497 (UDP) is the difference)

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1507

UPnP allows several computer (or iOS devices) to use the same ports at the same time (Therefore it does not matter if the iOS device or Computer changes IP).

Apple Base Stations have a setting called Port Mapping Protocol to use instead of UPnP.

I figured out the root cause of the problem and a solution for it. Had the same issue with my logitech C920, where the mics would not work with facetime.

Cause of Problem: The Logitech C920 camera/mic operates on a 2ch-16bit integer. You can verify this by opening "finder + Utilities + Audio MIDI Setup" and then select the HD Pro Webcam C920 and look at the "Input" Default values.

The Mac Mini's "Built-In Output" and "Buiilt-In Input" formats were set for 2ch-24 bit integer. Therefore, the default input and output were out of sync with the C920 default format.

Solution: Change the Mac Mini's default Output to "2ch-16 bit integer". You don't need to change the default Input but it doesn't hurt to do so. Once you do this, the camera and it's built in mics work on facetime and all other video chat applications.

Hi,

New to discussions, in fact new to iMac. I know I know...for shame....

Anyway, regarding Facetime and the no volume issue...I offer this.

I bought the iMac to plug in a Firewire based analog to digital converter box...in short to record music using Garageband and other software. The box allows me to use good microphones and play various instruments into a mixer as I record something Miley Cyrus will never cover (not that she covers anything) ...blah blah blah.

My point is...

I got no volume in Facetime UNTIL I rebooted the iMac after having unplugged the firewire cable from the iMac. Never mind that I had correctly checked the SOUND selections in 'Applesymbol' / 'Preferences'. I had to disconnect the cable.

This lends creedence to the idea that sound settings may be sticky and/or that Facetime has some hardwired settings. I have recreated the problem and solved it again by plugging in and unplugging the firewire cable from my box. Can't say it'll work for you without a reboot but it might.

MY IDEA

Therefore, in my innocence, I recommend any oddball connections you may, USB, Firewire, even headphone/mic things be DISCONNECTED and then a reboot. After reboot, you should be then operating by internal mic and speakers. Some of you might then be lucky enough to have Facetime working.

If you took the time to read through the facts of the problem you'd have read that the sound issue has nothing to do with volume. It has to do with the sound on one side of face time (usually the side with the person using a computer vs. a mobil device) just QUITTING. No sound can be heard from the person using the mac. It's apparant that the qlitch is in the facetime on the OS vs the iOS.

i just figured the problem and has nothing to do with changing those integers. in the audio MIDI setting (app in utilities folder) for the c920 make sure the format is set to 24000hz, and it will finally work. if its set to 16000hz or 32000hz it wont work. i actually went backand put the integer settings to its original settings. 24integer for mac and 16 for c920.
