Streaming change?

This morning, I went to stream the Adam Carolla podcast. When I click an episode name to play, instead of seeing the usual black screen with the quicktime logo, with a slider bar that allows me to skip to the middle of the stream, I now stay on the list of episodes, and a simple "stop" icon appears next to the episode that is playing. This is in itunes. ***? How do I get back to the old functionality?

I have an unlimited data plan. I do not want to be forced to download something before I listen to it, or stream with neutered usability. I'm in the car when I change to a new podcast, so I can't always download on wifi ahead of time.

I am having the same problem with two podcasts: Kevin Smith's SModcast and ESPN's Fantasy Football Focus.

This is awful. I can't even get them to play through streaming at all - the square "stop" image shows up to the left of the podcast title and the circle around it keeps spinning, but even after 5-10 minutes of waiting it still never plays. So I am forced to download the podcast instead of streaming it.

NEED A FIX!

THANK YOU! I have been looking for someone else having this problem for days. This change is the worst. Yet another reason that it *****? Living in NYC I would often press play on my favorite podcasts as I left my apartment, then it would stream through 3G and the bar would load up at least enough to get me through my commute by the time I'd get to the station entrance. Now I am left with dead air the minute I go down the subway steps. Change it back! This is the worst Apple!

I have some updates, but nothing good.

From my contact at Adam Carolla -

We looked more at our end of things and nothing has changed from publishing or distributing the content that we have found. I also go word that it's possibly Apple, but may be due to back end changes on some of their systems due to some work their doing, but that's speculation at this point.

From my contact at the hosting company for the Adam Carolla content -

Thanks for the video - that helped us understand the issue.

Sadly - It is not something we can correct or even address on our end.

Some of the shows that work as you expect are with us and set up identical to ones that do not work as you expect. And we see shows from other hosts that both work and don't.

I have contacted Apple to see what they know of the situation. Sorry I could not offer a solution per the old use case.

Once we have feedback from Apple we will update on the discussion board.

Sooo, does this mean Apple is hiding something?

I'm glad to finally find some information about this issue and hear that others are as concerned as I.

This update has severely crippled my use of iTunes to stream podcasts on my iPhone. I only listen at work or while I drive and often pause the stream to take a call or talk to someone at work. So far, I've noticed the change on only some of the podcasts I listen to including most of the TWiT network podcasts (This Week in Tech, MacBreak Weekly, etc.) and the Ace Broadcasting network (Adam Carolla Show, Ace on the House).

I am very dissapointed that this change has rendered my ability to stream these shows useless since I can no longer pause, fastforward, rewind, etc. I would highly suggest that any podcast affected by this change contacts Apple immediately since this is likely causing a massive reduction in the amount of listeners each week.

At least it hasn't affected Uhh Yeah Dude yet! -knock on wood-

Just wanted to pass along the info that it's not just iDevices that are affected. In addition to my iPhone and iPad, I'm also having the same problem with all (non-video) podcasts on my MacBookPro, including Fresh Air, On the Media, RadioLab, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, among others. Streaming or downloaded, same thing.

Very, very, very annoying. Seriously, what kind of developer fails to notice that a media player "upgrade" makes the, uh... MEDIA PLAYER... incapable of basic functions like rewinding, fast forwarding, or remembering where it left off? And even if Apple's developers are suffering from some kind of collective head injury, where were the testing and QA people?

Grrr. End of rant. Off to leave message where somebody from Apple might actually read it.

I don't know if I am having a similar problem on my Macbook using Safari, running Leopard 10.5.8. However, I saw that the last comment to this thread said that the problem still existed on Sep 12, 2011.

The problem I am experiencing is that when I am streaming a video on the web I cannot fast forward or use the tracking control at all. I believe it is Quicktime that is built in to Safari plays a video. The movie plays but when I manually click to a location in the movie it just snaps back to the beginning of the movie. Does anyone know if this problem is related to the one in this post?

I find it a major flaw in the software.
