Will iCloud work with Snow Leopard?

Agreed. And Apple better be careful because a alot of their customers are the "Switchers" that started with the Intel Based Macs. Nothing is to stop them from switching back if Apple is going to play games like this.

I'm successfully running icloud between my iOS5-run iphone4 and ipad2....that is, all calendar and reminder entries are showing up on each device shortly after entering them. Enter on one, it shows up on the other. Nice.

I am running SNOW LEOPARD on my 2007-Intel iMac. I have been trying to avoid upgrading to Lion.

Reading this thread says the ONLY way to get my iMac calendars/reminders/emails to sync up with the iphone and my ipad is if i UPGRADE to Lion?

Does this same rule apply for syncing email? I have 4 separate email accounts to maintain and its getting pretty tiresome having to delete emails on three separate devices.

My ultimate goal is to have them all in the cloud so I can read, reply and then delete on any of my three devices.

Is icloud my ONLY way to achieve SYNCED email accounts ? 😕

I have 6 email accounts, thay have always been in sync, no cloud needed. Of course, that won't work with POP accounts, but most all accounts also support IMAP, which will sync on all devices. It works because your mail is stored on the server, instead of the local device.

OK, Pretty sure that will not work for me, as I have a Pop3 mail acct...(actually 2) that I need often. I also use gmail and a server at work, but those accts also thankfully work with mail on ipad, iphone and imac

You can probably configure your POP3 accounts to IMAP. I don't see that iCloud will sync all mail accounts on your devices anyway. When I turn on that option in iCloud, it wants to create a @me email account. So I am assuming it would only sync that one account and not your POP3 accounts.

I was just about to ask if iCloud worked on SL..seems there is a lot of confusions out there. I think I best go along to my nearest Apple shop and see what they say.

I have a MacBook running a clean install of Lion, really clean, erase disk write 0's.

I have an iMac running 6.8. I cannot do without this, I have so many aps that will not run in Lion. FCP Pro et al.

If move to iCloud via the MacBook will Apple assume I no longer need MobileMe and close that 'account'? thus making the MacBook the only way to access my mail?

I figure I wont be permitted to run both? just thought I would ask.

Another bummer...I wont be able to pick up mail on my iPod touch as it wont accept the latest OS5.

So I guess I am going to have to cough up dosh for a new iPod. It does have video and camera...oh hang on. But not the spec lauded by the new iPhone???? oh maybe I treat myself to a iPad...er,no, same old camera. I think I will wait for the new iPod/iPad that matches the new iPhone4s. Or wait to see what the iPhone5 brings early next. Can you see a pattern emerging here or am I being paranoid?

Thanks for this impact suggestion. Naturally, I have never even heard if IMAP, so I have some investigating to do, to learn whether my Verizon emails and my Microsoft Exchange web based mail can all be integrated into the apple mail program and be located in the clouds. If that truly is what would sync all accounts and eliminate all of the email duplication that I currently deal with, then I really do not need iCloud!!!

Use the add new accounts in the settings dialogue. There are preconfigured wizards to walk you thru the process for most of the mail services, including MS Exchange and Yahoo, Gmail, etc.

Then once you have the new accounts working, you can copy your old messages from the old account to the new on, if you want them all together. Then remove or disable the old POP accounts.

Everything should be sync'ed on all devices, no iCloud needed.

Seems like I did run into an issue with Yahoo a few years back where they wanted to charge extra for the server type that supports local clients. Not sure if that is the case now!

Anyway, there is plenty of step by step instruction on each mail service provider site for configuration if you cannot get it working with OSX and iOS Mail. I do have all those working and syncing on my devices without problems, no cloud needed.

You are in the same boat as myself and others...an Early Intel Based iMac with the Core Duo processor does not meet Apples specs to run Lion. So even if you wanted to, you can't upgrade. At least I don't know anyone that's tried yet. If you haven't already, you may want to read from the start of this discussion to see the various comments about this issue and iCloud.

You couldn't have summed it up better. I started using MobileMe with an iPhone 3G and XP machines. Which I have for work & was able to sync with work pc's & home pc's. The iPod & finally the iPhone 3G really started to consider swtiching. Since now they use the Intel chips. I could dual boot with WIndows so the compatibilty out the door sort of speak. I held on switching to Mac waiting for Arrandale chips on the MacBook Pro vs buying a Core2Duo MBP. So Now I have a barely approaching a 1 (ONE) year MBP system with the i7. Yes it supports Lion. Now I am forced to upgrde to Lion to keep using the rebranded MobileMe service (iCloud) which I have been paying for 3 years to sync acrros my various XP machines, now the Snow Leopard, & iPhone. That is why I switched from PC to Mac. Now if I don't upgrde to Lion I lose iCloud the issue is it won't sync with XP anymore. There are tons of corporate customers who were using this service. Coming from PC we are used to long perios of support. Not dropped like that! A less than one year old MacBook Pro has to be forcefully upgraded to receive a service it already had which is now rebranded to iCloud? The $29 is not the issue it is the drop support for e.g. XP machine sync's which users used to sync between their work corporate pc's, travel pc, & home pc. There are millions of corporate customers still on XP which is still supported by MS. The issue of dropped software support for Rosetta which a lot of people have Office 2008, Quicken, Adobe CS3, or CS4. Those are expensive to replace. I am very dissapointed @ Apple's stance they way they are treating us users. This is coming from a PC to Mac switcher that is just barely approaching it's one year anniversary. I spent over $3000 on my first MBP 10 months ago including accessories & software. Never expected this type of forced upgrade or drop support on Snow Leopard the previous OS. MS is supporting 3 currently right now XP, VIsta, 7, & soon 8. Come on Apple the users will buy the hardware when we think it is the time. Don't pull stunts like this. You got our money. I am still paying for my notebook & you pull this drop support? I will defintitely think 10 times before I buy or recommend a Mac for myself or any future switcher. Yes you're products are good but support to users means more. If you don't have any loyalty to your users surely you can't be expecting in return. Irony is iCloud is supported in Vista LoL... Amazing but not Snow Leopard!

Yes, Thanks for pointing it out. I have read this entire discussion, and have come to the sad realization about iCloud.

I am sorry to have gotten off track about syncing emails and numerous email accts, which is only a part of this larger discussion. If I hijacked the discussion in any way, by brining up email-syncing, my apologies.

I am off to try to resolve my own priority, which continues to be how to use email on 3-4 different devices, and not have it be such a time-waster. As for iCloud, I realize I just do not have burning desire for it.

If you haven't considered this already, the best I found to have all my email accounts in one place was to have everything forwarded to my primary account. I have my own domain name and hosting (which is quite cheap these days) so I never have to change my primary email address unless I want to. Since all email from other accounts that I want to see is forwarded to one place, it all ends up there. I also have web access to my primary email account or I can download it to my devices or computer. I don't currently use IMAP, so I can't speak to that, but I've heard good things about it. I'll probably go that route at some point, but it's not necessary for me at this time.

It totally amazes me the arrogance that Apple is showing with these moves. That arrogance kept me away from their products for years. I decided to give it a shot when they moved to the Intel Chips for a number of reasons, and being able to run Windows on the system either with Bootcamp or Virutal was a nice plus. If they keep up this nonsense, they are not only going to lose people, especially switchers, back to the PC and Windows, but they will probably start loosing some of the iPhone and iPad users to the Android devices. My contract is almost up, and trust me...I'm seriously considering an Android Phone at this point. I know I'm not the only one.

Yes Sbatson I can definitely see the switchers switching back I am even contemplating it. I had the momentum to convert my house to an Apple house. I just only have an iPhone 3G, iPod Classics, iPhone 4, MBP i7, I still need a desktop & I was considering an iMac. This has definitely put a complete hold on the purchase. I don't know if I want to be a loyal customer to a company that is not showing for it's customers. I am seriously comtemplating a Win 7 destktop now. They just kill support for 1 Gen OS older support like that. I honestly can't tell my friends to switch with that kind of support. What a shame as OS X is a solid OS except for Lion which was released with too many bugs... I am almost done with my contract on my iPhone 4 as well. I am going to start looking on the Android side now. SInce this Wall Garden just got taller!!!
