I just talked with an Apple Care rep and I was told that I can update my MM account to iCloud and my calendars and email (@mac and @me) will still sync with my Mac running Snow Leopard. I only asked about those 2 specific things, because that is all I care about. You will have to do the migration to iCloud through your browser

Cowboy36,

I have decades of PC and OS experience from DOS through Windows 7. I have a ton of PC based software. Windows 7 is pretty darned stable, it's pretty nice and there's mucho support for it. I'm using it at work and I have a quard core system at home I could easily upgrade to it. And let's not forget Linux which has many flavors, ton's of support and all the free Open Source stuff available.

I do love Apple's ease of use and stability, but I don't like being limited, left behind or expected to upgrade just because they want me to. I should have known better, They've done it several times throughout their history.

My next move remains to be seen, but I'm not in a hurry to invest any more money in anything from Apple at this point. I'll keep what I have and watch for a while.

Wanting the latest and greatest OS and Apps goes no longer together with owning old hardware. And Hardware is old the minute you unbox it at home. Might be tragic but that's how it is. Windows Users know this already, especially the "gamers" that are in a constant Hardware-Upgrademania only to run the newest games on PCs.

This is simply a way to kill the planet. If you're ok with this, I'm yet to understand.

Sjazbec,

We are not talking about games. We are talking about productivity. iCloud is just a rebrand of MobileMe if it was working on Leopard & Snow Leopard there is no reason it should not work on iCloud. We just need the client for Snow Leopard. There is no GPU or heavy CPU involved.

In this respect your answer is totally off base. I fail to understand your comment in this case.

Cowboy36,

I 100% agree! Regardless of what the software is, we aren't talking about trying run the latest 3D Game on 10+ year old systems. There is absolutely NO reason that iCould should not run on Leopard or Snow Leopard, or heck Tiger for that matter! If they don't want to integrate it into the OS, fine. A simple Client or plug-in will work just fine. They do it for Windows, they can do it for older Mac OS Versions. Everything is there on the iCloud, all they need to do is talk to it. There's a bunch of non Apple products doing it. I don't want to hear that Apple Can't do it, they just DON'T WANT to do it becuase it will foil their plans of getting more people to spend money that they don't need or want to spend right now. I'm just glad I've been around the computer and technology block several times and seen all this crap before from Apple and from the PC side and Microsoft. I upgrade when I'm darn good and ready too, not before. In situations like this, I simply seek out a solution that works for me until I am ready to upgrade.

And you would know that, how?

Do you know otherwise, by chance?

No, but the poster was so positive about it I naturally assumed that knowledge not possessed by others was in play.

I now see that I was wrong in my assumption.

Because as was already pointed out, it's just a rebrand of the Mobile Me Service. It's simply data on the web that is accessed and moved around. My humble 2007 iMac running snow leopard has no issues accessing the web, my local netowrk or running all of these other available Cloud Services. Are you implying that the All High and Mighty Apple can't do that?

I'm sorry, but I've never lined up like a zombie following Apple, Microsoft or any PC company ready to buy and upgrade anytime they wanted me to. And I hate to break the news, but there is NOTHING really new about "The Cloud" other than the term. Network Storage and Client / Server computing has been around for many years and Apple didn't invent that nor did they invent the term. The made a few changes to Mobile Me, took a few things out of it and called it iCloud. If you are going to quote me, then don't do it out of context. I did mention that a simple plug-in or client app could allow older versions of their OS to use iCloud. Have you read this entire thread? Windows XP users running the current version of iTunes and use iCloud but they won't support it on thier own systems? Simply no excuse and it will cost them a lot of users over time.

Csound1...are you an Apple Zombie? I don't drink alcohol, but I don't have to drink it in order to know what drinking will do to me short term and long term if done in excess. Same logic applies here. I've been working with computer hardware and software for many years. I don't have waste my time trying to prove what is obvious to pretty much anyone that has some computer experience and common sense.

As I've already said, if Apple wants to do something, they can. It's just hardware. There is NOTHING magical about having a computer transfer data to and from the web. It's done each and every time that we browse the web. If apple wanted to offer a patch, update, plug-in, they could. If they couldn't, than we'd have to say they weren't very good and creating software. We all know that isn't true, so my first statemen must be true. They simply don't want to do it. Hopefully, they will change their tune. And let me just say that if, and I know it's a big if, but if they change their tune, I'll be thinking "I Told You So!" 😝

It doesn't work on those now because they didn't build it in. My point is that a patch, update or plug-in, it could. Again, it's just software that copies data around. You answer a simple question for me...if they can do it on a PC running the latest iTunes a versions back, why can't they do it on their own systems and OS with the most current iTunes?

I never said it would as is on those systems, I said it can be done. But that would require Apple to do some work to create a release a patch or software to allow it to work...and that would undermine they attempt to force otherwise unecessary upgrades to both hardware and Mac OS and that would cause them to loose money selling people stuff that they may not want yet. Sorry if myself and others won't fork over $1000+ to say that we can use iCloud while at the same time loosing support for older software that works just fine thank you very much!

There already exist solutions for iCloud in SL, many posted on this forum, certainly Mail and Calendars work, reports suggest that contacts are not so easy, server addresses are available so try for yourself, after all this is iMap and WebDav, both protocols are supported by SL.
