Microsoft Word and Lion

I've heard that really old versions of word don't run with Lion but Word from 2008 onwards does? Is this true? I am thinking of buying Office 2008 and just wondered if that would work with Lion or if I should shell out for the brand new office?

Although Office 2008 reportedly works as long as you are buying Office buy Office 2011 for full compatibility.

Michael,

Kinda' got to doubt that. We don't do custom hardware configurations since everything is still under AppleCare warranty agreements. Nor do we use any pirate software. We run updates as they come down the pipe from Apple. And, ALL 4 machines I've mentioned (including the TM backup inherited by the MBA) ran '08 just fine before Lion.

So maybe who's experience is atypical, I wonder.

Again, I'm not douting that you've had a problem. But it is atypical. The majority of people just on this board who have Office for Mac 2008 will tell you it runs just fine. One important thing to keep in mind is that just because you have a problem, doesn't mean everyone has that problem. However, you were able to solve the problem by upgrading to Office for Mac 2011, so no harm done.

Thanks! What with upgrading to Snow Leopard and then Lion I can only really afford Office 2008! May wait and buy the 2011 version. Thanks

While I am in no way endorsing this, not being a fan of the Cloud, you should be aware that if you buy Office for Mac 2011 soon, you may be able to get a free One (1) year non-commercial subscription to Office 365 Home Premium. The offer is here http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/offer/. The offer details (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/offer/pre-launch-offer-details-and-terms-FX102 902434.aspx?redir=0) used to include the effective dates. This article http://techofthetown.blogspot.com/2013/02/buy-office-2010-and-get-office-2013-fr ee.html has the effective dates for both purchase and redemption still going on. To be safe, I'd suggest giving Microsoft a call to confirm that the deal is still current if you're interested.
