Optical photoconductor needs to be replaced

Since installing Lion my printer utility continues to indicate "optial photoconductor needs to be replaced."

I have installed the latest Xerox printer driver for 10.7, but the message remains.

Xerox support says this is an issue with the CUPS printing configuration and Apple is aware of it.

Anyone else experiencing this? Any fixes?

This solution worked for me:

"You just need to add the printer again and choose one of the other options rather than the default IPP protocol. LPD worked for me and now I can print again."

Had same issue with a HP 9040 and got a mysterious fix. I looked up found your article and after reading it poked around and went to system preferences printers and scanners then double clicked the printer on the left hand side printer cam up with the error then I went to settings on the printer window that had the error then to options .. under that there was tray 1 , 2000 sheet input tray , Duplex unit. I have all those so I selected them all and magically the error disappeared. Not sure why and I went and deselected those items to see if it came back but it did not. Not sure what fixed it but I figured it was worth mentioning.

So, five years after the original post, I was working with an HP LaserJet 4200N today, having this same problem with Mavericks (10.9.5). Printer seems to print OK, but print queue always shows this status message. HP print driver version 19.13. Another user complained that this printer would only print one copy of a document and then stop, when multiple copies were specified.
