I have the same problem. I updated to the new iTunes & iPod software on Wed 1/18. I had problems opening iTunes (now fixed), but then it crashes every time I update my iPod. I get a Windows message that iTunes is experiencing problems and has to close, do I want to send an error report.

I have reinstalled iTunes 6.0.1 & the 2005-10-12 updater, still the same issue. I then removed iTunes & Quicktime (including registry files), then reinstalled 6.0.2 (with the Quicktime standalone install). I've also restored my iPod. Now I have nothing on my iPod, and the update still crashes. Help!

i had the same issue as some other people here, where they couldn't get iTunes to come up, and it kept bringing up the license agreement. I'm not quite sure what fixed this issue, but here's a list of things I've done (not in any particular order, because I've done some of these multiple times)...

1. unstalled iTunes, Quicktime, and iPod updater
2. removed all references to iTunes and Quicktime in my registry
3. reinstalled iPod updater from my cd
4. reinstalled standalone Quicktime (from a link somewhere in this discussion board)
5. reinstalled iTunes from my cd
6. reinstalled iTunes 6.0.2 (because I was still crashing when updating my iPod)
7. updated my iPod via the updater
8. rebooted my computer multiple times
9. turned off NIS and followed Lorraine's tips
10. cussed at this problem (didn't fix anything but it's better than putting my fist through the monitor!)

Any other input will be very appreciated. All I know is, I updated both iTunes and the iPod updater, and when I update my iPod, it goes through the end (looking at the x of x countdown in the bar at the top of the screen), then I get the Windows "iTunes is experiencing problems and will now close" message.

Ok, so I got fed up & took a break.

Then, I:
1. Uninstalled Quicktime & iTunes
2. Uninstalled iPod updater
3. Deleted my Temp folder
4. Rebooted
5. Reinstalled updater, Quicktimes and iTunes from my CD
6. Rebooted
7. Restored my iPod

And it all works again (keeping my fingers crossed!)... I've been updating my iPod one playlist at a time, just to be sure. I think I'm going to stay away from updates from now on, until I absolutely have no choice!

I installed the new version of iTunes and updated my iPod software and get the same message that iTunes has encountered an error and asking me to send a report when I try to update my iPod. Somewhere I saw an article that suggested deleting the following file: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\SC Info.

After deleting that file the iPod updates, but says I don't have permission to put purchased music on the iPod. If I try to play purchased music, then it asks me for my password. I can play the music, but if I try to update the iPod, then it gives me the error message again, and I'm back to the beginning. Any ideas? Anyone know if Apple knows about this problem?

It is worth bumping this thread to the top and emphasise that the fix for the problems occured by upgrading to Itunes 6.0.2 are mostly related to Norton security Centre.

I followed the instruction posted on this support site to "permit all" in configuring the firewall under itunes and hey presto it solved the problem!!!!!

What firewall are you referring to?

To highlight the problem with this release, I will post to report the identical problem. The upgrade to 6.0.2.23 (with Quicktime) was successful. I can use iTunes acceptably. However, when the iPod is connected the iTunes does a forced shutdown when trying to update the iPod. I confirmed the problem occurred on my 3 iPod (2 nanos and 1 mini). I did the 5Rs and the problem continues. I have the Microsoft generated error message as well.

Is there a way to retrieve an earlier release so I can back this version out? In my mind, this deserves immediate attention from Apple. No release should ever be put into production without thorough testing and piloting.

I had the exact same problem. The only way I was able to fix it was by installing a previous version of iTunes.

1. Uninstall iTunes 6.02, iPod updater & Quicktime.
2. Reboot.
3. Download & install Quicktime standalone.
4. Reboot.
5. Download iTunes 6.01 from filehippo http://www.filehippo.com/download_itunes/?478 & install.
6. Ta-da... the older version of iTunes should now work without crashing when you sync your iPod.

Good luck!

I had the same problem.
I had Itunes 6 (I don't know if it was 6.0.1) I got an Ipod 30GB and when It told me to update Itunes I did.
After that I was not able to sync the Ipod. It would give an windows error (Itunes crashes in short) I did the following
- Restored Ipod with the latest
- uninstalled all apple software( itunes, QuickTime, etc)
- I installed again Itunes 6.0.2 and it kept crashing. It didn't matter what I did to the Ipod or the Itunes It would keep crashing. I thought of getting Itunes old version and guess what you can't download an older version (from apple site) You can if you Google.

My solution was to uninstalled all apple software and install Itunes from CD (6.0) Now I am able to sync my Ipod again.

In short, Get you CD with Itunes or find an older Itunes than 6.0.2 and you will be able to sync again your Ipod.
