I live in london, a friend in ireland bougth final cut pro x, and is not happy with it. He wants to sell it to me, and I wouldn't mind doing him a favour and buying it. Now, is this legally correct? thanks .

Yes, i thought that, although he actually bought it at an apple store, so he's got it on discs.

hmm, i don't think it is possible to buy FCPX on discs. Are you sure he's not talking about FCP7? (which you can legally buy from him)
Regarding FCPX, there is no mechanism available to disconnect his account from the software, and reconnect it to another one. Same thing for anything you purchase via iTunes -- it's not like you can transfer music/videos to another account.
The only chance you might have is for him to call App Store support and ask. Another possibility is for him to ask for a refund, in a manner that's been well documented in the early days of this forum. Then you purchase it yourself.
Now that apple is fully embracing digital distribution, maybe things will change with regards to what you can and can't do regarding "ownership" of a digitally purchased software license.
It is physically possible to copy his FCP X to your computer but I doubt whether it would be legal even if he deleted it from his own computer.
A further drawback would occur if future updates were only available from the Apple Store . . . . you would not be able to use them.
It's not this one by any chance, which is completely illegal and a total waste of money?
A month ago someone else was doing the same thing for about £5.

I think you may be wasting your time contacting Apple because I don't think they have prepared for the obvious eventuality that many people will want to sell their downloaded software exactly the same as owners want to sell their hard copies.
Other people have made enquiries but there seems to be absolutely no policy regarding it.
Yeah I think the courts are murky on this but it's pretty obvious the way a purchase is tied to a user's account that Apple doesn't intend you to resell digital goods. Imagine if you could resell music you bought digitally, how would you prove it's not still in your possession?

I just checked the Software License Agreement page, and nothing is listed for Final Cut Pro X. It does have Final Cut Studio, and in that it does state that you can make a one-time transfer with some caveats. Again, not Final Cut Pro X.
The old FCS is simple.
You must give/sell the complete suite to someone and erase it from your own computer.
