AppleMobileDeviceService.exe floors CPU and won't sync iPhone 4 with iTunes 10.4 and XP

I just updated iTunes to 10.4.1.10. After the upgrade, the AppleMobileDeviceService.exe runs one of the two cores at 100%, resulting in 50% CPU utilization.

When I connect my iPhone 4 (4.3.5) the sync starts but hangs on the first backup step. At that point, both the AppleMobileDeviceService.exe and iTunes are flooring the CPU's... now at 100%.

I've reintalled iTunes without luck. I've also re-booted the phone, which has solved sync issues in the past, with no luck.

I can see others having issues like this, but I haven't seen a resolution yet.

Thanks!

Same problem here. I did the suggestion to "uninstall" the files from C:\program data\....... and all that did was break iTunes. I had to uninstall and reinstall itunes.

Apple just needs to fix this and stop making the end users suffer. I have two laptops at home and they have the exact same problem, yet different "Apple offenders" - on my laptop, its the AppleMobileDevice.... on my wife's laptop its the dotmacsync client.

Apple should have to reimburse us for the extra power usage and wear and tear on my equipment. I just woke up to find my wife's laptop fan running wide open again, and that stupid dotmacsync client had the CPU pegged out all night and the entire laptop is hot to the touch.

UNBELIEVABLE - i'm sorry i ever bought an Apple product... i have two ipad and two iphones and wish i could get my money back.

Are you sure that you did the uninstall in EXACTLY the order specified in bigdig2001's instructions? It *must* be in that order. And, then made sure that all of the files were removed as specified?

Maria, after you uninstall but before you reinstall iTunes, reboot and reinstall your scanner drivers and see if your scanner works. The problem you're describing could be a hung USB port or hub, too. Try a diferent port -- or, if you're using a hub, plug the scanner directly into your computer. [You're not using a network scanner, are you?]

Just to make triple sure, I did the whole procedure again today. Exactly like it is set out before.

I even cleaned all apple files from my registry.

I installed the latest version of iTunes but the same problem came up as soon as I restarted my PC!!!! I am very dissappointed to say the least.

Now my MobileMe doesn't even work anymore.

I scanned Windows for any irregularities this week, no problem there. I can't spent any more time trying to rectify this. Apple need to step up its game.

The scanner issue I had was solved. I cleaned the file from my PC registry and reinstalled the scanner - it now works fine. It looked like the software was corrupt.

Thanks for the advise.

I tried all the fixes described on these threads, everything removed in the right way, everything tidied up and nothing worked.

saw this blog today

http://www.thebambers.me.uk/wordpress/?p=316

involves resetting winsock from admin command prompt (pc obviously)

netsh winsock reset

reboot the machine and all is well!

I was beginning to think there was no solution to this.

starfishrjb,

Frozen back ups, CPU burn, frozen itunes, multiple versions of itunes, time on the support line ($29.99)... APPLE COULD NOT FIX THIS. This has been a reoccuring problem for me for 6 months. I was about throw my iphone out the window... I may be a novice, but I do know how to uninstall in the order specified and that wasn't cutting it. This works and was so much simpler and quicker. You saved my sanity.

If anyone gets the 'needs elevation' error in command prompt, go back and reread the 'command prompt as administrator comment: start button/all programs/accessories/RIGHT CLICK command prompt/run as adminstrator.

Thanks for turning me on to the real solution with no uninstall required!

Made an account just to thank you starfishrjb.

Problem occured before and after with iTunes 10.4.1/10.5 and with iOS 4.3.5 and iOS5. Could not update customer's iPhone or iPad. Did the full uninstall which temporarily fixed the issue until iTunes was updated to 10.5 and the issue happened again.

Long story short, 'netsh winsock reset' from an admin prompt and a reboot worked like a charm. After many many hours of troubleshooting, - THANK YOU.
