If you buy a wifi only iPad, it cannot be upgraded to 3G. You can, if needed, buy a 3G hotspot and connect the wifi iPad there but that is an additional expense. The 3G iPad can be used on Wifi and 3G.

Ya, I know. Do keep in mind that if you have constant internet connection through an ISP (Internet Service Provider) then you will need to cash in a one time fee to purchase a router. If you purchase the 3G model, you will have to pay a monthly fee to get internet on it (assuming you make use of 3G).

IF your father is loosing his eyesight, an iPad may not be a very good choice. First of all, it's a tad trickery to get into email than with a regular computer. Then, there is the virtual keyboard that is a bit harder to master than a regular keyboard. Also, NO MOUSE support. And of course, the screen is a smaller size than most desktops/laptops.

I'm 72 and have been into computers since 1981. I don't know the age of your dad, but from the "failing eyesight", I'm guessing 60+. I wouldn't buy an iPad for an older person unless I knew they could handle it.

Hi Chris. If you have gone with the 3G option you can get a prepaid plan with either Optus and Telstra if you get the $150.00 prepaid it won't expire for 12 months. I suspect this will more than meet your Dad's needs and it is probably and easy option. When you buy the iPad also buy a prepaid sim, the $30 credit only lasts30 days so just go on line and top up the pre paid. Better to go with the more expensive top up as all the others expire after 30 days.
