From what was written here, Verizon's "insurance" is a rip-off! I'm with Sprint and the insurance is only $7/mo and $49 deductible for normal phones and $99 for "premium" phones like an iPhone.
Apple does not offer AppleCare +Damage for the iPhone 4 only the iPhone 4S. Apple only covers up to 2 incidents of damage within the 2 year period, but they are only $49 ea, but the AppleCare is $99.
If you live nearby an Apple Store, you can get free service & tech support at the Genius bar, if not, then AppleCare covers all the annoying phone calls you gonna make to Apple about whatever for 2 years from date of purchase.
Make the best decision, but seems that Verizon's is more expensive if you getting the 4S. But if you only getting the 4, maybe it covers what Apple does not.
*note that a Warranty will cover parts replacement if a component "fails" but insurance is what actually may cover mishaps or damage (i.e. liquid spills, broken screens etc.) In general AppleCare Warranty never covers damage to the phone (with the one exception noted above) and jus covers malfunctions due to parts naturally going bad within the device.
