Apple Care Warrenty vs. Verizon Insurance?

Last week I bought the iPhone 4 and the Verizon lady told me I can take insurance through Verizon or I can sign up for the Apple Care Warrenty.

What are the pros and cons of both? In your opinion which one is better?

iPhone 4, iOS 4.2

But you have both products. We don't. Furthermore, what's to assure you that we know any more about what to do than you do?

Allan says the Verizon product is just insurance, but he probably doesn't know what it provides any more than I do. In point of fact both products are forms of insurance given that's all a warranty really is.

Here's what Verizon told me recently but it often depends on who you talk to. AppleCare extends the original Apple warranty for a second year and covers manufacturer defects. It can be added to your iPhone any time during the first year warranty period. The Verizon insurance @ $9.99 per month covers loss, theft, and accidental damage. Verizon's Extended Warranty @ $1.99 per month extends the original manufacturer's warranty and covers mechanical and electrical defects. There are deductibles of $169 and $199 depending on your phone.

If I get this correctly you pay $10 a month for insurance plus $199 Deductible if you have the top of the line phone. So, in one year you pay $120+$199= $319.

Two years without a claim = $439

Three Years without a claim = $559

How much will they charge you for a new phone without 'insurance" vs. what you paid in with insurance and deductible?

What are the EXCLUSIONS in the contract. Have them give you a sample contract. The devil is in the details.

Good luck

From what was written here, Verizon's "insurance" is a rip-off! I'm with Sprint and the insurance is only $7/mo and $49 deductible for normal phones and $99 for "premium" phones like an iPhone.

Apple does not offer AppleCare +Damage for the iPhone 4 only the iPhone 4S. Apple only covers up to 2 incidents of damage within the 2 year period, but they are only $49 ea, but the AppleCare is $99.

If you live nearby an Apple Store, you can get free service & tech support at the Genius bar, if not, then AppleCare covers all the annoying phone calls you gonna make to Apple about whatever for 2 years from date of purchase.

Make the best decision, but seems that Verizon's is more expensive if you getting the 4S. But if you only getting the 4, maybe it covers what Apple does not.

*note that a Warranty will cover parts replacement if a component "fails" but insurance is what actually may cover mishaps or damage (i.e. liquid spills, broken screens etc.) In general AppleCare Warranty never covers damage to the phone (with the one exception noted above) and jus covers malfunctions due to parts naturally going bad within the device.

Verizon costs and Sprint Costs. The delta between the two is relatively small. For those that need 'insurance' ; perhaps it is a good idea.

I did get the 'insurance' plan when I bought the Mac Book Pro. I feel I get great service when I needed it shortly after buying this, my first Mac, as transition over from the dark side takes some adjustment. The 'insurance price relative to the cost of the computer was healthy as a rate to 'insured' value of the PC. However, the quick personal tech support for the next three years is handy and very cost competitive vs. what I had to deal with when I owned several XPS Dell's.

It is just good to know all the details of 'insurance' before you make a claim. That is where good companies, like Apple, relaize the efficacy of their process is paramount for customer satisifcation.

I am sorry I did not go Apple decades ago, I just felt I was not artsy' enough to be a Mac guy. Apple sure made it easy! I just did my first iVideo, albiet amature, I was pleased with my inital resuts. I look forward to getting better over time with Apple!
