thanks! that did it.....but all of this makes me wonder at how Apple OS has a reputation for being more intuitive. i'm not seeing that, especially from this issue. Sigh.

I found it when clicking onto the apple icon and looking in 'used objects', then under 'documents'. Works if not too many docs have been opened since the fatal one.
