I am using a Sony HVR-A1U and yes I am aware that Apple suggests reducing the size to 960 pixels I didn't want to compromise on the quality of the end product & wanted to keep the best the quality going into iMovie. I have not been able to capture more than a few minures at a time before iMovie starts to bog down & only imports at 1/2 or 1/4 the real time import. Did you have any special settings to allow real time ,full size import?

Rick,

That's probably worth a shot. I just read a Discussion group post yesterday on the way iMovie 08/09/11 handle video (Single Field) versus how predecessors like iMovie HD and HD 6 handle video (Full Field). I don't know if there's any validity to the statement being made but the writer was trying to indicate that iMovie picks one set of fields in an interlaced video and uses that as the basis for what gets saved in the Apple Intermediat Codec (under 08/09/11). The point being that out of two fields for every interlaced frame, one was being ignored or tossed out. This allowed the iMovie program to run more smoothly and quickly (CoreVideo,CoreAudio etc.)

Here's a link addressing some of this from back in 2009: DV video quality

Hi thanks for the link and the info, I did in fact go back to iMovie 06 HD and started to import the video from my Sony camera and transfered about an 1hr of footage flawlessly. I appears that the issue does in fact lie in the new iMovie11 and not the computer. I was not aware of the issues that have faced the new iMovie interface since it was change a few years ago. As a traditional video editor I was trying to keep things simple and stay current and use the latest version because I liked some of the new features offered in iMovie11. The problem is if I can't import the film in the first place, I will just have to continue using the old version of the program. Sometimes New things aren't always better. I guess I can imort the footage in iMovie06 then use some of the features in iMovie 11 if I want to convert it, I hope that is possible. I will let you know . Thanks for all the help everyone.
