Podcasts greyed out

I've listened, and watched, podcasts for many years now, and been very happy with the iPhone for that, but the last couple of days, some episodes have started being greyed out. This only happens on the iPhone though. It works fine in iTunes on my mac.

The greyed out episodes all are from (or after) August 22nd. The episodes before that works fine.

I've got 8 different podcasts at the time. Total of 26 episodes, where 18 of them are greyed out. What to do?

Only solution I can find on google is related to Parental Preferences. They've been off since I bought the mac. Double checked now, and all the settings in that tab in preferences is turned off.

I also am currently experiencing the grayed out videos (from podcasts). They only exist on my iPhone 4s, not in iTunes. I've tried swiping them to get the red "Delete" button, tried various syncing/unsynching of Podcasts within iTunes. I cannot get them to appear active so that I may delete them. Something is definitely out-of-sync somewhere within the video database and indexing. All I want to do is delete these nine videos and I'll be happy again. I have read and tried all that has been posted to date with no success. You'd think there would be an easy way to delete things from your phone, wouldn't you? Apple, please provide a method to do this. Thanks!

I suspect the reason you cannot delete 'greyed' podcasts/music/videos is because the files are not actually on the device. It seems like there is an index to the file but not the actual data.

Have you tried disabling syncing of videos and/or podcasts, doing a sync, and then re-enabling syncing? That is what worked for me and others. It is definitely an annoying bug.

I'm having the same problem. I've tried everything. Restored factory settings twice now, turned off podcasts, synced, turned back on, resynced, restarted blah blah blah. This is ridiculous. How does Apple not have this figured out? Upgrading to the new OS was the worst possible decision.

Come on Apple - you're better than this. Ridiculous!

This may not be the same cause for everybody, and I feel somewhat dumb now that I've figured it out, but . . . make sure you're not over capacity on the storage space. I found that I just had too much stuff which kept me from updating creating the greyed out problem. It would have been nice if it Itunes told me this but now my problem is solved so for that I am thankful.

I'm sure this is not the same problem for most of you but maybe it will help some of you. Good luck to all the rest. 🙂

I've been struggling with this same issue for months. I tried something recently that has worked, at least for my last two syncs.

Turn off genius

Uncheck sync via wifi

Unsync everything - I synced with only my apps still left synced with the phone

Sync again with just podcasts - nothing else

Sync a third time with whatever else you want to add - music, movies, etc.

After that, I seem to be okay for now. I think either Genius or the wifi sync was interfering for whatever reason.

I seem to have found a solution that worked for me. Like many others here, I too had greyed out podcasts that would not go away through normal syncing. I tried all the solutions recommended here, short of a full restore, and found that the podcasts remained only in my iPhone. As far as downloading them again for deletion purposes goes; my podcast episodes were only published for a limited time and thus were no longer available. Removing the entire podcast and unsubscribing in iTunes proved fruitless as the offending files would still remain in the iPhone after syncing.

I found my solution in the most obvious of places. Knowing that the "corrupted" files occurred upon deleting the individual podcast episodes directly from my iPhone and verifying there was no trace of them reflected in iTunes; I deduced that the issue at hand remained in the memory of the iPhone itself. Again, I had already worked all of the recommendations listed here short of a full restore and was looking for something less drastic. I went to the following location on my iPhone: Settings/Usage/-under the 'Storage' heading follow - Music/- under the 'Podcast' heading I found the offending podcast and swiped across to bring up the Delete button.

Once removed, I returned to the home screen and synced my iPhone as normal (via Wi-Fi if you find this detail pertinent). Upon completion the offending podcast was restored minus the grey "corrupted" file traces. Since this process only removed the specified podcast and its corresponding episode files, the restoring sync time was nominal.

I hope this may assist someone else in their solutions.

I'm having the same problem. None of the proposed solutions seem to help. One element that might distinguish me is that I'm syncing manually via iTunes to two different computers to keep my address book / iCal in sync. I'm using Snow Leopard since I'm not ready to give up some legacy applications (Word X still saves me at least weekly when Word 2011 crashes).

Interestingly, most of the offending podcasts are actually in the book library as they don't have audio. That said, one of them is a basic NPR podcast.

Tried the turn off / turn on wifi. Tried the Settings / general / usage / music delete. I tried restoring from a backup. No luck. I haven't tried the "kill your entire iTunes library" option yet - seems too scary.

I'm nervous about doing a full reset of the phone - I haven't upgraded to the new iOS as I love the old maps program and having it integrated and I'm nervous that a full reset will put the new iOS on my phone. I'd rather have the ghosts than a non-mass transit enabled mapping system.

Any other possible thoughts anyone has on a solution? It's a pity there isn't a way to purge the music / podcast library files in the phone...

Podcasts are greyed out on the iPhone when the podcast has not been fully downloaded, and there is no data connection.

To correct this, enable WiFi or Cellular Data.

I had to enable Cellular Data in two places:

Settings | Cellular | Podcasts

and

Settings | Podcasts

Then go into the Podcasts app, and on the page "My Podcasts", swipe down to force downloading.
