Photoshop .psd files converted to Unix Executable files

I'm an illustrator and I store my art on CDs and DVDs. After a period of time my files are converted from Photoshop .psd files to Unix Executable files and I can't open them. What can I do to get my work back??? -and keep this from happening in the future. Why does it do this????

Thanks for any help.

I know, Kurt, but Photoshop is very "touchy" in some ways and that is why I always had Graphic Converter. Luckly, I haven't had a problem with PS in a long time and didn't use GC. I'm glad I have upgraded to the latest version in case I have another problem with PS not opening files.

(If Graphic Converter won't open a file, I know it's a lost cause because It will usually open anything.)
