SuperDrive just stopped working

All of the sudden my superdrive won't recognize any disks. It tries to spin up for a few seconds, then ejects the disks. It had worked great up until today. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot? Thanks.

6 months ago, I had the same problem, I have a DVR-104, and I found in Appel's Downloads a solution, because there were a update for differents superdrives, so I installed and my problem finished, but now another time, I have the our common problem, and I have lokking for that update, and I've found the same, but this time my imac doesn't run, this time there is message saying it doesn't need an update.

I also tested all types of things, but my pioneer doesn't run yet, but I can read video and music dvd, but only original's, so I can't read others and burn.

Did anybody find a solution for this?

My G4 iMac's Superdrive developed the same problem recently as all others above only 10 days after the 3 year Applecare warantee expired. A CD or DVD would not even show up on the monitor so could not play or burn a DVD or even use a DVD lens cleaner disk. A disk would spin for a few seconds and then just stop. After much reading I concluded it must be dust causing the problem. I finally took off the bottom cover and sprayed canned air through the louvers in the area of the Superdrive and it started working again and has been working OK for over 2 weeks now. If it worked for me, it may worth a try for others. Stan

Well, add my Mom's iMac G4 Flat Panel (1.25 GHz) to the list of failed SuperDrives. While visiting for a wedding, I was going to install some updates, only to find that the SuperDrive does exactly as described in several posts above: pop in a disk, no real attempt to spin up, spits out after a few seconds. System Profiler recognizes it as a SONY DVD RW DW-U10A. Very disappointing, and I don't have time during this visit to start pulling the iMac apart to blow dust out. Apple, what are you going to do about this?

I have the same iMac as sae44 above and it wasn't recognizing burned dvd's anymore. Been slowly getting worse over the last few months. The burner was also failing most of the time. I was just about to give up when I thought what the ****, blow the dust out of it and see what happens.

I used my small compressor and blew out all the openings I could without taking the computer apart. Needless to say, there was lots of dust, but guess what, it recognizes burned dvd's now and burns copies just fine. It' only been a few days, but I'm encouraged.

Before anyone replaces their superdrives I would suggest at least trying this method of cleaning.

I have had the same SuperDrive problem twice now. The problem is the SuperDrive refuses to mount commercial DVDs. The first time I experienced this problem was in August 2004, only a couple of months after my initial purchase of my iMac. Called up Apple, and they referred me to a Authorized Apple Service Center. Drove over 100 miles and they replaced my SuperDrive, once again I was satisfied.

The second time I experienced the exact same problem was in April 2005, just weeks after my warranty expired. Called up Apple once again, and they told me there was nothing they could do to help me since my warranty was expired. They even told me I could replace it myself, as many users are doing that very thing.

I came to these message boards for more information, and to my surprise I'm not the only one with this problem. I've tried many things to get my SuperDrive to read DVD media once again, including a lens cleaner, and canned air, but nothing seems to help. I'm currently going to purchase Apple's thermal paste ($30) so I can dismantle my iMac and take the SuperDrive out for a cleaning. If that don't work I don't know what I'm going to do.

I'm very disappointed in Apple's quality, as well as their service and support. Apple has not even acknowledged that there is a serious flaw with the iMac's SuperDrive. I'm sure someone will soon take a civil suite against Apple, and win. I just want my SuperDrive to work with DVDs.

My SuperDrive has also started behaving strangely, it can not run the iLife install DVD and any attempts to burn DVDs are futile. Most DVD movies work fine and so do CDs. Very weird, haven't had any other problems with this machine during the three years I've had it. My first thought was that this was hardware related but I'm beginning to think it's something to do with the OS.

Anyone with solutions, please let us know.

Mine is a variation on the above. My drive recognizes discs, but it has stopped burning discs completely. By that I mean, it burns the disc information, so that when I load the disc back in, it recognizes what is supposed to be on the disc, but it doesn't burn the remainder of the data. So, as an example, I am creating a cd from a downloaded concert file, aiff file format, and it burns the track information, but none of the music in on the disc. Looking at the disc, I can see that the disc hasn't been burned, but it is not useable anymore because it has burned the disc info. Any clues what might be causing this problem? I did a reload of the system software for other reasons, so I'm thinking that it's not the software, but the fact that it burns the disc info suggests that it can burn, but it can't burn past the initial info.
Of course, my iMac is now four years old, but I'm not going to trash Apple, as others have, because nothing last forever. I just need to know if the consensus here is that the drive is toast or is there anything else I can try before opening the sucker up.

Thanks

I'm in a different boat as a lot of other posters. My SuperDrive not only doesn't read discs, it doesn't even spin. Usually when I put a disc in, it will start spinning noticably, but now I can't even hear it spinning. I tried in vain using a can of compressed air but to no avail. Anybody know approximately how much Apple will charge to replace the SuperDrive?
