SuperDrive just stopped working

All of the sudden my superdrive won't recognize any disks. It tries to spin up for a few seconds, then ejects the disks. It had worked great up until today. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot? Thanks.

My superdrive (pioneer 106D) stop working again (replaced about 1,5 years ago); as recommended I zapped PRAM (command option+PR) 3x times boing, repair permissions, restart again; Toast 6 still doesn't work BUT; burning from the Finder works !, you need to set speed at 2x, not faster !!, if you set faster you get the "0x8002006D" error code so far I tried Verbatim DVD-R and Traxdata DVD-R. I haven't tried burning from iDVD or iMovie yet.
I installed on a firewire external drive 10.3.9 with Toast 6, booting up from this external drive everything works fine with Toast 6, BUT the burning speed is only 2x !!,even you put your recorder preferences as 'fastest' setting I know that my Pioneer 106D is a 8x superdrive and the Verbatim DVD-R is 16x speed....
My conclusion; the superdrive is ok, but some software (apple updates ?) screw it up !

Well, I should have written back quicker. See my
previous post above. I did contact Apple on Monday
and the man said the Superdrive was definitely going
and he would authorize replacement. I took the iMac
17" flat panel to another authorized service place
and they agreed. It has now been two weeks and they
are still waiting for a replacement to arrive.
Backordered. that's how many macs are having problems
with their superdrives.

Hi John,
Are they going to charge you for the replacement? If NOT I want that Apple phone number!

Interesting! Some Apple support to help us figure this out would be nice!

i'm glad there are more people with this same
problem. My iMac will play and burn CDs but not DVDs.

Why hasn't Apple come up with a solution? My computer
is still under the AppleCare plan. I shouldn't have
to buy a new DVD player and install it myself. That's
ridiculous.

I'm not glad there are other people with this problem. More people having issues doesn't make it any less of a problem - it just means there is more misery in the world.

If your computer is still covered by Applecare get them to sort it. It's what you've paid for.

I can't believe this is still happening!

This happened to me and many many more people well over a year ago and we never found an answer as to why this was happening. I have a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104 and I'd never even used the DVD when it all packed up. Apple didn't care & there was no help from Pioneer.

I couldn't afford to have the "SuperDrive" replaced, so I ended up buying an external DVD-RW from LaCie for around £50 and it's been brilliant.

Most drives should work under Tiger fine. If not Patchburn will be the driver you need.

Most of us have Pioneer drives (DVR-106) installed by Apple so it seems sensible to stick with that product line.

The DVR-111 has now been superseded by the DVR-112 (18x for £21). If you've found a good deal on the DW-Q28A then go for it.

Let us know how you get on (preferably in a new thread!)

After watching the slow death spiral of my Pioneer 106D Superdrive I've purchased an external Lacie d2 firewire drive. It's CDR/RW, DVD+/-R/RW, and dual layer. So far it's worked fine with iDVD, iTunes and Toast (which came with it).

It seem the wiser thing to do than bust up the iMac to replace the internal drive. Once upon a time only DVDs failed, lately CDs are too. Shame on you Apple for letting all of us G4 iMac users suffer with this terrible piece of equipment.

At least this external CD/DVD drive will work with the new intel Macs. I'm sure going to think long and hard before investing in another machine with a SuperDrive!
