SuperDrive just stopped working

All of the sudden my superdrive won't recognize any disks. It tries to spin up for a few seconds, then ejects the disks. It had worked great up until today. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot? Thanks.

Hello and Welcome to Apple
Discussions.

Have you run the Apple Hardware
Test that came with your PMG4?

I suspect that
as your drive doesn't appear in System Profiler it
has died completly. Given how easy it is to change a
drive on an PMG4 I'd be tempted just to buy a new
drive. Your current drive is only 2x on DVD-R, 8x on
CD-R, 4x on CD-RW and 1x on DVD-RW and can't use Dual
Layer or DVD+R/RW disks.

At just $34 this drive is
approximately 8 times faster at burning all types of
disk. Under OS X Tiger will work with no additonal
drivers. Under Panther you'll need the Patchburn driver.

If
you want an answer on anything more specific you'll
be far better to post in the PowerMac G4
Forum
and start a new post.

How can you run hardware test if no cd's will play?

I've lived for a year with no optical drive at all. Pioneer's quality has fallen and Apple is not willing to give even a slight hint as to how to deal with this.

Why?

So you will buy a new one! Duh! This is America.

But I am not giving up on my otherwise reliable and now 4 year old iMac.

Anyone find out how much it costs to send the ailing baby in to get a new superdrive? (I'm not certain I need a superdrive after all...I never burned a single DVD.)

I've researched this at Pioneer NO HELP! I talked to friends, lo and behold they have the same problem. They bought external drives instead of replacing the superdrive (200.00). Some websites are selling a new Pioneer superdrive for about 50.00 but either you have to install yourself or pay. I personally don't want to open this baby up myself, especially after reading instructions on how to do it. You need special tools and some kind of gel or paste to put around when you close it back up (probably expensive paste). I'm also now wary of Pioneer, and may go with an external drive from a different manufacturer. There are many to choose from, if I find a reasonably priced good one I will post it. As for Apple and Pioneer, I find it REALLY SLIMEY that they are not addressing this problem! Instead of wasting my time searching for answers, it would've been nice to know, it's broke, you can't fix it, buy a new one!!!! Funny how they are all breaking down at once, right after the applecare expires! Come on apple back up your products! We all can't afford to buy the latest, greatest products!!

While it is scary opening it up, they really aren't special tools (standard Phillips and Torx screwdrivers, which are in a Sears screwdriver set, which no one should be without anyway) or expensive. The XLR8 your Mac site mentioned above provides excellent instructions. You'll also find out how dusty the insides of the iMac get. The only catch on the instructions it that on the drive there are five sets of pins with a connector on one set that you have to make match to the original. As to the paste, it's only ten bucks at CompUSA and I'm sure it's available at RadioShack as well.

Now the catch, having installed mine, it works fine and reads all the cds it wouldn't before, but it won't burn them and the System Profiler tells me its not set up to do so. This should be something relatively straightforward to fix, but my plea for help has thus far gone unanswered, though I expect this reply might get me some help.

I'd suggest to those who are frustrated by this problem, remember that MacOSX is a **** sight easier to work with than that other one. I messed up my system software several times, though my own fault, and have managed to recover everything everytime, as well as replace the SuperDrive in one really nicely designed computer with only one little glitch (though a big frustrating one at present. Help!)

Good Luck

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.

Firstly I'd recommend that you start a new post rather than use this one. Although the issues are similar this is an old thread and you may not get the attention you need.

Have you tried booting from the Apple Hardware Test CD and run the tests? (I realise this may not work but you should try).

I have the same problem that many people reports reports.
CD in, somes seconds of sound and CD ejects
I tried
1 Cold Start
2 DVDparamlist
3 Language sort
4 Reinstalling the OS X Tiger many times
5 Cleaning the computer (off course the drive)
6 Cleaning the lense
7 Installing the update

I am tired. I give up.

Please let me know wich drive external or internal could replace my superdrive. It is more easy to buy a new one and install it that continue to try to put ER procedures to my computer.

Thanks for the answers.

The best resource for drive compatibility is here. Just plug in your details.

The drive that's on my list for next time I get around to cracking the case on my iMac is the Pioneer DVR-111DBK. It's from the same family as your current drive (probably a DVR-104 or DVR-106), not only is it about the cheapest out there ($40 US or £30 GBP) but under Tiger works out the box without the need for a third party utility like Patchburn.

Remember to renew the Thermal Paste when you closed the iMac up. It's essential to keep your iMac cool and prevent the G4 chip from overheating. Thermal Paste can be bought from any computer shop. If you look on the photo below you'll see two pillars (on the bottom left and right of the photo)each of which should have the old paste scrapped off and then need a pea sized blob of paste squeezing on:

The Take-Apart Guide is also on xlr8. I'd recommend printing it prior to starting the upgrade.

Hey Arturo,
I went by the Macmall where I bought my computer and they are acting like it's my problem not a Pioneer/Apple rip-off! They said it would be over 100.00 to install a new Pioneer superdrive. The salesman pushed the La Cie external on me 119.00 with a "lite" Toast program. I'm still shopping. As for the folks on here saying open your computer and install it yourself. I say BEWARE! The paste alone is 30.00! Pioneer replacement 40-50 bucks, paste 30, opening a can of worms???? I'm also thinking CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT!!!! Anyone else want to join in????

Thermal Paste is about $2.50.

I suspect the vast majority of iMac G4 owners are quite happy with their Superdrives but I'd be genuinely interested to know if you're getting much response from users wanting to join your action.

I know a guy called Chris posted here recently with the much more common dead iMac G4 screen issue. He was successful in using the UK's Sale of Goods Act 1979 which states a item must last an appropriate length of time. He was successful and the UK retailer he bought his iMac G4 from footed the bill. Now I know that doesn't directly apply to you but perhaps you could investigate whether a similar law is in place in the US.
