I recently purchased an Onkyo stereo receiver with a wireless USB adapter, UWF-1, and want to stream audio from my MacBook Pro through my stereo system. The receiver tells me it is connected to my wireless LAN, but I cannot get music to play?

New to the community here, thanks for your patience. I recently purchased an Onkyo TX-8050 Network Stereo Receiver with the UWF-1 USB adapter with the intent to stream audio from my MacBook Pro to the stereo. I have gone through the setup instructions for the adapter and the receiver gives me a message saying that it is connected to the password protected network, but that is as far as I can get.

I have gone into iTunes and clicked on the "Open Stream" option, but I just get a pop up box labeled "URL" that is empty. I have Home Sharing turned on and File Sharing turned on, but I am not seeing the receiver in my Finder window or as a iTunes device.

I would appreciate any and all advice and assistance.

Thanks so much.

Thanks for the reply. So I have been searching the iStore for Airplay and I find lots of information about what it is, but nothing about how much it costs, how/where to buy it, etc.? If my receiver is not AirPlay enabled, then am I SOL and need to come up with an alternative way of playing/streaming my tunes from my MacBook to the Onkyo?

Thanks in advance,

Dan

Fortunately, AirPlay does not cost anything as it is a streaming protocol used by Apple. Currently, the AirPort Express and Apple TV are AirPlay-ready. A number of other companies, like JBL, iHome, Denon and Klipsch are also rumored to be working on AirPlay versions of their products.

Your other option would be to get an AirPort Express and connect it to your Onkyo analog or optical digital audio input and stream from iTunes that way. I currently do this with my 10+ year old Harmon Kardon HT receiver.

Hey DRR59,

I am in a similiar situation, trying to stream my itunes library to my Onkyo TX-NR717 receiver. I have not been able to do so, did you come up with a solution?

FYI, I run fusion on my Mac, and windows media 11 allows me to connect it's library to the receiver, but I can't seem to see the drive I store my files on to add them to the libarary.

I would really like to make the itunes library available through the receiver. Any assistance would be great, thanks.

You can't do it directly because the receiver is not airplay compatible. I stream to an Airport Express that's plugged in next to the receiver, and then I run a digital cable from the Airport Express to the receiver (plugs into the same Airport Express socket as the audio-out cable). Works fine, but you'll need to buy the Airport router. You can get an iPhone app that will let you control the reciever (volume, on/off, etc) through your phone, but that's not the same as the Apple Remote app, which lets you control the itunes streaming.

Streaming from Apple devices to a receiver is fairly simple if you have an Apple router and an Apple Airport Express (audio only) or an Apple TV (audio and video).

Make sure your Airport Express/Apple TV and your Airport Extreme/Time Capsule are on the same wireless network as your iOS device or Mac. Attach the Audio-Out socket of the Airport Express to one of the receiver's input ports, or plug the HDMI output of the Apple TV to an HDMI input port of the receiver. Choose the right input selector on the receiver and start streaming.

I have an Onkyo TX-NR636 and the Apple TV via HDMI works like a charm. I currently stream from iTunes on my Windows PC to my PC speakers, my old Technics stereo (via Airport Express) and my Onkyo 7.1 stereo in the next room (via Apple TV) simultaneously.

The one thing I would be able to do though, and have not yet figured out how to do, would be to go into the reverse direction, i.e. to stream from my Onkyo receiver to my Apple network enabled devices, e.g. buy a few Airport Express and attach speakers in various rooms, streaming radio to all devices.
