why can't I receive phone calls while texting?

Why can't I receive phone calls while texting on my iphone4? Phone calls do not ring/vibrate or even show in missed call log.

Is this normal? I've looked for a setting to change this but can't find one.

thanxs for your help!

It never happened to me, but I guess, since you can browse the web and receive calls at the same time while being on 3G, it should be possible to text without missing a call as well. Does this always happen, or could it be, that your 3G reception was not that good, that your phone switched to Edge instead?

Maybe you can try to reproduce the situation and see if this could be a reason.

MTS is a supported carrier. It should work. It may just be a problem with the local tower(s) you're connecting to. If it continues, you may want to call MTS and complain. The only reason I can think of why it may not work is if you're not connected to 3G when it occurs. I'm not sure if Edge supports simultaneous communication sessions including Text. I believe the spec calls for it, but it may not be functioning where you're at.

Thanxs everyone!

Just called my carrier ~ MTS.... they said that the text and voice calls do come in on the same line. So if at the moment I am sending or receiving a text the line is techinically busy. That is why the voice calls will go straight to voicemail and do not log into call history. The phone doesn't acknowledge the call..... it's busy with sending/receiving!!

So basically a you are SOL on this.

Quite frustrating as I am a huge texter!!!!

Although I just had a thought... how come I can send/receive texts while I have a voice call in progress?? Wudn't the line be "busy"??

Oh well

Thanxs again!!

Cheers:)

I explained that below. Text messages travel on the voice signaling channel, not the voice channel. If you are on a call you are using the voice channel, not the signaling channel. But an incoming call notifies the phone that someone is trying to call you, so if the signaling channel is in use it cannot do so.

If you text a lot perhaps you should get a separate texting app that goes over the data channel, such as Google Voice.
