Use Lion’s Versions as a recovery tool

Hello

I discovered a serious drawback in Lion.

Versions is behaving flawlessly as long as all is well but, when a document is corrupted, we can’t get old versions as a backup.

It’s foolish, but it’s not the first time which I will deliver something fitting an Apple gap.

Before giving the solace, I will give a quick description of what is stored by Versions.

The versions are stored in a hidden folder named ".DocumentRevision-V100"" at root in every mounted local volume. In fact, as my macs aren’t networked, I don’t know the behavior of networked machines.

In the hidden folder is an other hidden folder named ".cs"

This one embed an arborescence leading to the file named "1" on the screenshot.

This file store the datas related to the versioned files.

To be short, for every document it embed :

(1) a complete clone of the first version of the document

(2) descriptors to objects of the 2nd version which weren’t modified

clone of the modified objects. For iWork documents, this means at least the complete index.xml. If you asked the app to store a preview.pdf, this one will be stored too.

Knowing that, it’s easy to understand why we get the wheel of death when Versions apply upon a large document.

(3) same kind of contents for version 3

In the folder PerUID we have other arborescences. Each of them ends with a folder entitled "com.apple.documentVersions" containing symlinks allowing the system to reach the different versions of documents of a given kind.

User uploaded file

Don't worry, this screenshot was made long before the one available between script 2 and script 3. They aren't related to the same database.

In the folder db-V1 is the file db-sqlite embedding the infos linking items in the folder PerUID to the contents of the file "1" stored in the folder ".cv"

Thanks to patpro from applescript_fr@patpro.net, I was able to decipher the contents of this database so, I may give access to the stored versions.

Script 1: copie_.DocumentRevisions-V100.scpt

This one allow us to copy them folder ".DocumentRevisions-V100" in a location where we may change its attributes to get access to its contents without disturbing the main versioning app.

To be short, it may be an alternate disk or a disk image.

Hello

I made a small change in the first script.

It no longer create the large dmg disk image which I used because I can get the size of the folder to copy.

Now I use a sparseimage disk image defined to be able to reach the same 2.5 Gbytes size but which in practice use only the needed space.

On my test disk I get a 52.4 Mbytes disk image versus the original 2.68 Gbytes one.

Here is the script :

Here is an other tip related to file recovery.

If your machine crashed when you were working on a document which you didn't save once, the Lion's Autosave feature may be your friend.

With a bit of luck, you may retrieve the document which you didn't save in the folder :

<StartupVolume>:Users:<userAccount>:Library:Autosave Information:

Here is the name of one of these documents on a French system :

Copie de sauvegarde de Document Pages non enregistré.pages

If your file was treated by the Versions feature there is certainly one or several copies available in the dedicated folder.

They are really clever but, Alas, I can't use the scripts for you.

You may send your file to my mailbox, I will try to revive it.

Click my blue name to get my address.

I just hope that it will not be in the same state than the late received one : the file was entirely filled with the byte $00.

Hello Jerrold

If you have comments about these scripts, don't hesitate.

For instance, I'm not sure that creating a Numbers table at the end of the second script is a good thing.

Maybe it's a feature which must be optional 😉

So now I have files named... Backup of Backup of Backup of (original file name).pages How can this help me at all? Seriously who let this happen?

I also don't have control where I save the latest version if it is going to a new location unless I duplicate and rename then save. With Save As I could direct the files to a new location. Safari and all the Adobe Products continue to use Save As thank goodness. This change is one of the worst features of Lion OS and unreal that it got implemented.

Feb 10, 2012 11:50 AM in response to whyisthistakingsolong

As I wrote in an other threads, it's your fault if a file is named Backup of Backup of Backup of (original file name).pages.

I'm not fool enough to store files named this way.

Save As… is gone and will not be re-introduced.

Save a Version doesn't create a new file which you may reach easily.

Ity store data in the invisible folder which is the subject of this thread.

If you want to create a new document starting from an existing one, you must use the

File > Duplicate

File > Save…

scheme which give you the ability to define the name and the location.

Liking this scheme or disliking is not relevant,

it's the available one.

Yvan,

I'm not sure if this answers my question or not. I began a document in Pages but saved it as a Word Doc on a flash drive. I attempted to open it on a PC running Word 2003 but the program didn't recognize the text so I gave up. When I returned to my Mac I opened the document on my flash drive in Word for Mac. I completed the document hit save and blink, blink it turned into a mess of characters and numbers. Is there any way to translate this back to what I actually typed? This was only saved and created on my flash. Here is a sample of what I now have:

I'm not a sooth sayer so,

I can't guess which exact Operating system you are running

I can't guess which exact Pages version you are running.

I don't use M…oSoft products so I have no idea about what stroke.

In your case, even if you run Lion, Versions can't help you.

As far as I know, it apply only to native Pages documents.

When you work with Pages, always save as Pages document.

Word format must be and remain a complementary one.

Here is a script which may help you.

I assume that you saved the odd document as a .doc file.

--{code}

(*

set theFile to choose file

set maybe to readtheFile

on writeto(targetFile, theData, dataType, apendData)

-- targetFile is the path to the file you want to write

-- theData is the data you want in the file.

-- dataType is the data type of theData and it can be text, list, record etc.

-- apendData is true to append theData to the end of the current contents of the file or false to overwrite it

try

set targetFile to targetFile as text

set openFile to open for accessfiletargetFile with write permission

if not apendData then set eof of openFile to 0

writetheDatatoopenFilestarting ateofasdataType

close accessopenFile

return true

on error

try

close accessfiletargetFile

end try

return false

end try

end writeto

Run this script.

It will ask you to select the file to decipher.

Then it will read its contents as raw text

store this raw text in a text file on the Desktop

open this text file with Pages.

With your example, it returned :

Yvan,

I do not know how to do what you described and the revived sample you sent me is the closest thing I have to any of my document. Would it be too much to ask if you can do this with the entire document and send it to me?

I greatly appreciate any help you can give otherwise I need much simpler instructions on how to get to this point.

Thank you again,

Erin

I'm wondering why Apple take time to deliver Help resources.

Go to Applications > Utilities

You will see the icon of the Script Editor.

User uploaded file

Double click it.

You will get :

User uploaded file

In my message, select the script contents :

User uploaded file

Copy then paste in the Script Editor window :

User uploaded file

Click the pointed button to compile the script.

User uploaded file

It may be a good idea to save the script for a future use.

Explanations in an other message.
