Just got a new imac 27" - dlighted with it in every way :-) 10.7.1
All my backup drives are external of course. Mostly OWC FireWire.
In the past have used SpinDownFix to keep 'em rolling so that there's no wait while they all start up every time anything needs to access the FileSystem.
But I can't help thinking there must be a better way.
Anyone know of one, please for Lion?

System Preferences > Energy Saver. Uncheck "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible"
Yes, thanks, Steve; that only seems to work with the internal boot volume - not externals on FireWire :-(
Er..., it does work on my iMac (mid 2011) with Lion 7.1. All my external FireWire drives remain spinning until I sleep the machine.
As far as I can tell, my externals keep spinning on two iMacs with that Energy Saver box unchecked until iMac Sleep time. I just checked access on both and it is fine.
How come you have an avatar which is not included in the list under Your Stuff > Profile/?
Is it because of a priviledge accorded to your rank?

Energy Saver box unchecked... and my 3 externals ( 2 x FW 800, 1 x USB ) keep spinning on my iMac...
Do your Ext HDs have any proprietary software installed on them...?
If so, this could be why they keep spinning down...

Luck of the draw, Jim. That doondoggle only seems to work sometimes, with some external disks.
It's never made a difference on mine.

There is a utility called "no Spin" on Macupdate
I haven't tested it.
To be honest, I have forgotten if it is an extra option. Never mind, my drives keep spinning. 😉
