MacBook Air Screen Cracks

I bought my first MacBook Air just over a month ago and couldn't have been more careful with it. I used a case everytime it went anywhere and didn't bang it on anything, drop it or knock anything against it. So I was obviously confused/annoyed when a relatively small crack appeared on the LCD behind the screen literally out of nowhere and without anything happening to it. At my local Apple reseller/repair store they took a look at it but like me didn't have a clue how it happened. Anyway we contacted Apple and a replacement was sent.

So I've had this new Air for around three weeks and this time I've been even more careful with it, with nothing at all happening that should have caused damage (trust me, I'd have remembered if even the smallest thing had happened!).

Just now I've noticed a crack that looks exactly the same as the one before but on the oppisite side of the screen. Like before I was just sat with it infront of me, the crack wasn't there one second and then suddenly it was.

I haven't had the chance to contact Apple yet, but I highly doubt the guarentee will cover this again.

Has anyone had similar problems? If the MacBook Air is so delicate that damage happens this easily, literaly without anything to cause it, then it's just crazy and a massive design flaw.

Thanks.

MacBook Air, iOS 4.3.3

It's hard to say. I am "careful", and have never had a problem.

One person's "careful", is another's "brutal". I have seen a few people who say they "baby" their machines, which are full of dents and scratches they don't even notice!

Can you clarify your level of care?

Do you put the unit in a backpack or case wherein other items in the case/backpack might hit, compress, touch, lean-on, or put pressure on the lid?

I would classify the MBA as fairly "delicate". I use an incase perforated hardshell case, and transport in an incase nylon sling sleeve. I still am very careful, as if any drop or hit is probably going to damage it. In other words, I treat it like a live human baby.

MacBook Air 2011 user for over a year, only problems have been faulty mic and weak wifi (which I just lived with). I closed my lid a few days ago and the next time I opened it, a white vertical bar appeared on the screen. I called up Apple and asked for support, they told me to turn off the computer and press some keys to refresh the settings. The next time the laptop turned on, there was a horizontal line. I booked an appointment with Apple. The next day the bars got bigger and a crack appeared in the center of the screen. The next day it became more prominent.

Today, I went to the Apple Store to tell them of the problem, they told me that no one else has complained of the issue and that it wasn't their fault and I had to pay ~£350 to get the screen replaced.

I believe if more people registered this spontanious cracking issue, we could get something done about.

I have the same problems with my MacBook air 2012 model, 2 months old. They said crack is my fault where it was increased generally, there is no drop, pressure carried on it. Even it has a super thick bag for it. I was asked for around 750 dollars service fee, but I complained it is the fault of the machine itself. Now waiting for their judgement.

We have the same issue. A university-owned MacBook Air with a cracked screen which appeared out of nowhere. The laptop was never dropped or had been impacted by anything which might have caused the crack. Our Apple-authorized service department informed us that the repair would not be covered by AppleCare. See below:

In reference to the computer that you have in for repair:

MACBOOK AIR 13 - C0*******JWR

The display issue is due to an impact to the display and as such will not be covered by the computer's warranty.

A full quote for your repair follows:

DescriptionQuantityxPriceTotal

Apple Labor

2.0x$70.00$140.00

Display Module

1.0x$460.00$460.00

Shipping

1.0x$7.00$7.00
Subtotal$607.00
Tax$0.00
Total$607.0

There are too many instances of the same experience for it to be a coincidence. What worried me is that if the display is replaced with another which may at some point spontaneously crack we will once again be forced to fork over another $600.

Who did you talk to to get the problem resolved? My wife treats her Air like a baby but the LED started cracking while setting on her bedside table open. It continued to spread until it really needed to be replaced. There was no impact, weight set on it, no marks on the computer of any kind but Apple doesn't think it is a defect. They are charging RM1800 to fix it (approximately US$600). I have many Apple products and have been very happy with most of them. The Macbook Air, unfortunately, is not up to Apple's normal standards.

I talked to Apple Care telephone service when my Air was denied to repair under warranty. Through this online care, I had to talk with the Seinor Apple Care advisor. Give them a lot of pictures of my Air taken by myself as well as the staff from the Apple service. Then, they said the result is still the user's fault (perhaps an accident occured without me knowing). Totally in depression, I was expecting discount on replacement cost such as 50 percent ( before it was like you around 600 US $).At Last, they gave me a call, and they agreed to cover the new replacement cost at their own account. They changed the whole display( not repairing), and I had to pay only for labor cost of 50$.

This is a frustrating problem. I have a Mac Book Air that just got a spider web on the screen. Someone reached over me for their iPad and then it slipped out of there hand. Once corner hit just below the keyboard deck. The other struck the left side of the screen.

Everything still works fine, it just looks funny. Such an accident is definitely not covered by Apple's warrentee. This may have been one of those times that Best Buy's accidental damage program might have helped... not sure.

My local authorized repair shop says that, essentially, they don't repair them. They have an exchange program with a company that referbishes the machines. It's 500 bucks to swap my machine for a referbished model. I forgot to ask if the shop would transfer my apps and everything... not sure.
