iPhoto doesn't recognize pictures on card / already imported pictures

Hi all,

iPhoto '09 (latest version) on my wife's MBP (CoreDuo, early 2006, latest Snow Leopard) has always worked well for het (about 35,000 pix in the database). Last week, out of a sudden, it stopped recognizing new images when a card is plugged in (tested with two different SD cards from two different cameras). Manual importing works, but it won't recognize already imported images anymore, it just imports them again.

I already re-built iPhoto's database (by holding alt + cmd when starting up iPhoto), but it didn't change anything.

This is really strange - can anyone help us here?

Thank you!

Best regards,

Thomas.

Hi Terence,

just checked a few things:

- iPhoto doesn't start up anymore when a card is plugged in, although the volume correctly shows up in Finder

- when starting iPhoto now, the card volume doesn't appear anymore in the left hand column

- in iPhoto settings the Mac is still configured to open iPhoto when a card is plugged in

- creating a new library doesn't help (same behaviour as with the old one)

- renaming com.apple.iphoto.plist doesn't help either

Anything else I should check?

Thank you very much for your great quick help!

Best wishes,

Thomas.

Just had a flash of an idea and solved the problem!

I wondered what will happen when I set the program to be launched when a camera is attached to Digital Images. Did that (option was correctly set to iPhoto), and see - Digital Images started up. Launched iPhoto, re-set it to iPhoto, and see - all is fine. iPhoto starts up and shows all un-imported images. Great! :-)

Something must have gone wrong when it saved its settings, I guess.

The only thing that remains unclear is why iPhoto stopped recognizing dublettes when importing images manually. But then I did not test this myself.

Anyway, it seems to work again now! :-)

Best wishes,

Thomas.

Well, I was too fast yesterday. Nothing is solved.

Today my wife said that when she plugged in the card from her new camera (8 GB), iPhoto starts up but then showed the spinning wheel for 10 minutes, no pictures are shows. Then she got impatient and imported manually again.

I tested again tonight with the 8 GB SDHC card - all tests yesterday were done with a 2 GB standard SD card. And really, regardless what card I plug in, iPhoto doesn't start up. Even changing the program to start up when a camera is attached (see above) doesn't help.

So I created a new user account. Plugged in the 2 GB card, iPhoto starts and shows all pix. Fine. Closed iPhoto, ejected the card and plugged in the 8 GB one. iPhoto starts up and - just as described above - only shows the spinning wheel but no pictures within 10 minutes (364 images are on the card). Closed iPhoto again, and now it doesn't even start up anymore, no matter which of the two cards I plug in.

Can it be that iPhoto has a problem with the 8 GB SDHC card? We have been using this only for 3 weeks now, when we bought a new camera. Before the 2 GB SD card was used. However, iPhoto worked well with the 8 GB card for the first two weeks, and I haven't tried if re-formatting will help.

Any comments?

Thank you!

Best wishes,

Thomas.

Hello,

it's a pity that noone has an idea how to solve my strange iPhoto problem. It's persistently there. Today I finally found the time to test the card with my MacBook and iPhoto 11 - same behaviour. iPhoto doesn't even open whereas the Finder shows the card, and I have to import pictures manually.

I now formatted the card again and will see if this will change anything. If not, I will get a 4 GB "standard" SD card - perhaps iPhoto can't deal with the 8 GB SDHC card well.

Best wishes,

Thomas.
