How can I turn off Comping???

I'm not 100% sure what you are are going for but there is a Replace button in the transport bar on the right side of the screen ( if not, cntrl-click the transport bar and choose "Customize Transport Bar", then under Modes and Functions check "Replace".) If this button is selected, recording should work like tape, "replacing" the last take with the current one destructively. If the button is not selected, any area where two takes overlapped should create a take folder where you can select which one you like. Does this help?

BTW Comping means getting a "composite" of many different takes, therefore you can have a really bad instrumentalist play a passage way too many times very horribly but by taking all the good snippets of their performances, you can make them sound good. Ah, technology!

Logic 9 will create a Take Folder if you record more than 1 pass with cycle mode enabled. If you record in cycle mode with Replace turned on, Logic will create separate regions for each pass, and mute all except the last one. (Note that these regions will be stacked on top of each other).

If you record over the top of an existing recording without Replace mode turned on, Logic will also generally create a Take Folder. The details are described here:

If you record over the top of an existing recording with Replace turned ON, Logic will cut the existing region and replace it with the new recording.

I think you need to be sure that you understand what a Take Folder is, and how 'Comping' works... perhaps this will help?

With a Take folder (which can be created by recording in cycle mode, or by overdubbing an existing recording with Replace turned OFF), you will only hear one 'pass' at a time. You can then "Quick-Swipe Comp" to choose the best portions of each Take.

My reference to cycle mode was attempt to explain how you could stop Take Folders being created (when you are recording in Cycle with Replace ON). The regions created when you do this are not the same as a Take Folder, in that you cannot 'comp' them without further work.

I think you need to re-read my earlier posts.

You will NOT get a Take folder if you record with Replace mode turned on, regardless of the Cycle function.

You seem to be confusing Apple's terminology for a Take folder (which is a region which stores references to audio files recorded) with the more general concept where a 'take' is regarded as a recording 'attempt'.

Logic does indeed store recorded audio files in a folder on your harddrive. Take Folder Regions are not stored separately.

I'd suggest a thorough review of the Logic documentation. Take Folders are extremely useful once you have an appreciation for how they work and how they can be used.

If you want Logic to work more like a 'tape recorder', simply use Replace mode all the time.
