How can I turn off Comping???

Im new to Logic Studio and while doing some vocal takes the audio regions keep tripling and confusing me.

I dont know whats happening and whats what. Ive lost so many takes because of it. I do realise it probably

is a good function and usefull but for me right now Im only getting to know the new layout of Logic Studio and

its messing things.

Someone mentioned on another thread about holding down ctrl on the transpart bar and unselct Replace Mode.

I went into the settings and there was a "replace" button but it was selected, I unchecked it and the comping

appears to be still on my regios of audio takes!

Please please help me!!!!!

I'm not 100% sure what you are are going for but there is a Replace button in the transport bar on the right side of the screen ( if not, cntrl-click the transport bar and choose "Customize Transport Bar", then under Modes and Functions check "Replace".) If this button is selected, recording should work like tape, "replacing" the last take with the current one destructively. If the button is not selected, any area where two takes overlapped should create a take folder where you can select which one you like. Does this help?

Hey, thanks for your reply 🙂

Ok so if I select replace it works like an older set up as in it will replace each take rather than saving them

in a folder to use for comparrison later on in the mix. Again it is a good function when u say it like that but

I just didnt understand why it was suddenly happening and what it was. Numerous clones of my vocal takes

springing up and channel strips tripling etc...

Am I right in thinking this button on the transport bar is like an (X)??? Should that be turned on as in highlighted

in orange in order to have the replace mode active???

Thanks again for your help!!

Hi

Logic 9 will create a Take Folder if you record more than 1 pass with cycle mode enabled. If you record in cycle mode with Replace turned on, Logic will create separate regions for each pass, and mute all except the last one. (Note that these regions will be stacked on top of each other).

If you record over the top of an existing recording without Replace mode turned on, Logic will also generally create a Take Folder. The details are described here:

If you record over the top of an existing recording with Replace turned ON, Logic will cut the existing region and replace it with the new recording.

Cycle mode?? So I must have somehow enabled that mode and then with the replace mode being on its creating the addition takes and only allowing me to hear the last take???

How do I turn off the cycle mode?? Is that a really dumb question?? Haha. Im only learning as I go 🙂

Thanks for your reply and the link, appreciated!

Hi

I think you need to be sure that you understand what a Take Folder is, and how 'Comping' works... perhaps this will help?

With a Take folder (which can be created by recording in cycle mode, or by overdubbing an existing recording with Replace turned OFF), you will only hear one 'pass' at a time. You can then "Quick-Swipe Comp" to choose the best portions of each Take.

My reference to cycle mode was attempt to explain how you could stop Take Folders being created (when you are recording in Cycle with Replace ON). The regions created when you do this are not the same as a Take Folder, in that you cannot 'comp' them without further work.

You can turn off Cycle mode here:

So cycle mode is something I use regularly, I just didnt attach the name with the feature! I genereally use it more for re listening to a section to analyse, but I know its obviously people use it for multiple vocal takes.

I tend to be basic in my approach for fear of the unknowns (One take, One Listen, If its not perfect erase and try again).

I woulda presumed a Take Folder is a folder where all the takes go once you've enabled this function. But I woulda thought this folder woulda been external on your HD somewhere! I mean as I said Ive been simplisitic in my approach, if I dont like the take I erase it and try again. Which is silly when half the take could be perfect and used with another.

So its strange to me how the take folders woulda been created when I dont usually record with the cycle function on aswell as the replace mode. I must have selected it though.

Again thanks a million for your help with this. I know its frustrating trying to explain things to people over and over. Il check that link out now also:)

I think you need to re-read my earlier posts.

You will NOT get a Take folder if you record with Replace mode turned on, regardless of the Cycle function.

You seem to be confusing Apple's terminology for a Take folder (which is a region which stores references to audio files recorded) with the more general concept where a 'take' is regarded as a recording 'attempt'.

Logic does indeed store recorded audio files in a folder on your harddrive. Take Folder Regions are not stored separately.

I'd suggest a thorough review of the Logic documentation. Take Folders are extremely useful once you have an appreciation for how they work and how they can be used.

If you want Logic to work more like a 'tape recorder', simply use Replace mode all the time.

I did read your early posts and I 100% did have the replace mode seleted and turned on and thats why I was able to guess what the replace button was earlier when I said (X) highlighted in Orange when turned on. I still got the extra takes on my vocal. This is why I was getting confused. I just explained this and showed your post to a guy I know who uses Logic and he said he couldnt understand why its happening either.

I did say earlier that I did think it is a great function and probably very usefull but currently while Im getting used to a whole new software its something Id like to turn off while Im getting to know the general layout. I do fully intend on learning about all of Logics functions but one step a time.

Maybe for some reason its just happening on this project and on new projects with following your advice it wont happen again.

Thanks for your help on the above anyway
