Motion 5 ProRes4444 export shows gradient banding (Pics)

I have render settings set to their highest for a ProRes 4444 export - yet i am getting noticeable gradient banding. The following threee images are the frame in Motion (perfect) - the frame when exported (banding) and then export settings used. This is Motion 5 on LION on an i7 iMac freshly installed bougth yesterday from the store. Any ideas?

OK I'd like to give an update on this with more pics. This is a vector (PDF). There is a light in the project resulting in a gradient. There is still the banding issue regaurdless of what format i output to.

*This eliminates the previously suspected PSD file being the issue*

Here it is at 100% in the canvass as a screengrab with no banding whatsoever:

And here is what I get when I export it in *any format* including ProRes4444 with all setting at highest - as you can see there is banding in the gradient:

Now the second picture is a Jpeg to be sure but that's because the TIFF version is 16MB - but I assure you the banding is there is either version as well as any video i export right up to ProRes4444 which is 10 Bit and therefore ought to be banding free.

The question remains: Why can I not succesfully export a version as good as the canvas?

Just happened by with the same problem. One thing I noticed in Motion 5 is that the add noise filter in M5 has a type setting, and one of those types is labeled "Blue Noise (reduces banding)." I'm inclined to agree that it shouldn't be so difficult to export without banding but anyone needing a current permutation of the "banding" filter can find it here.

I found a solution, or at least It works for me.

If you have compressor installed...

-Go to the Motion graphics folder and duplicate the quicktime animation preset.

-Now go to the custom presets and select it.

-Under the encoder Tab go to video settings

-Change the quality from medium to best

-Save the new changes.

Now

From Motion 5 go to export with compressor settings

Choose your preset and export.

It really took care of the banding problem for me.

I hope it works for you, this solution should take about 2 minutes.

Sincerely

William Rivera

WOW .

OK I year has passed and I'm experiencing this again. But a new clue...

When I export out of Motion at ProRes (Best Settings) I get gradient banding. I have conducted a test to demonstrate that ProRes is entirely capable of rendering gradients without banding but Motion5 (and FCPX) seem unable to.

At the end of the tests - a twist! *The banding only shows up when viewed in Quicktime*

If you bring the clip back in to FCPX or Motion, no banding.

The banding also shows up in QT7

This is a mystery to me - does anyone have any idea what it could all mean?

At the last upgrade for Motion and FCPX, Apple released updates to the ProRes Quicktime codecs. Apple was very low-key about it... didn't even mention it in the update info [the big deal push was adding XAVC support], but I believe they have fixed the banding issue that had been occuring.

If the update is not available to you under Software Updates, you can download it from here:
