can't eject media with fcpx open

I'm using fcpx on a late 2009 13" mbp (8g ram, events and projects going to an external fw800 drive) to edit dSLR video captured on SD cards. I insert a card and do an 'import', initially set to 'optimize media' and 'analyze people', then trying it without transcoding to optimize. The media transfers OK, taking quite a while but completing - the background tasks show 100%, all tasks idle, and all the clips are in the event browser - but I can't eject the SD card; the finder indicates it's still in use by final cut ("The disk "" couldn't be ejected because "Final Cut Pro" is using it").

I'm pretty sure I've been able to eject media with it running at some point - after letting it sit for days on a few short clips - but that's unacceptable - I don't have days to import media. I can quit final cut, eject the card, then restart it, but starting fc takes quite a while to restart (>5 minutes - or much longer; at least once I've had to reboot to get FC restarted). Is there a recommended technique to get fc to 'let go' of a media card, or do I need to use the finder to copy the media to a local drive first, THEN tell fc to do the import from there?

thanks,

ch

Standard SDHC cards. Can be in the camera(s) or in the media slot. Makes no difference. Cannot eject in the capture window using either the eject button or the right-click eject. Cannot eject in the finder. In all cases, error message in Finder comes up stating media card is in use by FCPX. It is, however, not in use. The file has been transferred. The optimazations, etc. have complted. Nothing is ocurring. Everything is stopped. Only way to eject is to quit FCPX.

Numerous people have had this issue since 10.0 and with 10.0.1. Still a problem in 10.0.2.

Hey all, I was ready to jump on Tom for just asking more and more questions without giving a answer. But he may have found a way. I'm not going to say it will work for everyone, but I too couldn't eject a SD card while FCPX was running.

But Tom mentioned ejecting it from the Camera Import window. I normally close that window out right after I select my stuff to import, so I didn't even know there was an eject button there. I was using the normal method of throwing the SD icon into the trash or right-clicking and picking eject.

Anyway, for me, Tom's solution worked.

I just wanted to point that out, as it seemed glossed over. If it works for others, please post so everyone knows it's a viable solution.

Thanks Tom!

BTW, I had to load a clip off 4 cards tonight... and I tried Tom's tip. And I just wanted to say that it seemed to work great... even to the point of after the card has been ingested, I could eject it while it was transcoding. I haven't looked at any of the clips, I will let you know if something went wrong, but at this point it all appears to be working great.

Yeah, my bad... I didn't read every post. Actually I think the guy who posted the first reply outlined the procedure, but for some reason I didn't see it. Or maybe Tom writes better. :-)

But I did say in my post "But he may have found a way. I'm not going to say it will work for everyone, but I too couldn't eject a SD card while FCPX was running." So I didn't think it would work for everyone. But if it helps some people, that's good.

It did work for me... and none of the other methods worked.

I find that when using a card reader I cannot eject a CF card but I can eject SD cards.

I connect via a card reader which has two slots, one for each type of card.

The CF card is from a Canon 5D MII and the SD is from a Gopr0. Today I had both of these plus a Canon XL-H1 connected and showing up in the Camera pane.

In the import window the XL-H1 (tape based) doesn't have an eject button next to it in the Cameras pane but both the other cards do. Note that after trying to eject the CF card the media doesn't show up any more for that card but the card remains and cannot be ejected, either from the Import window or the Finder. **** frustrating.

The SD card ejects no problems.

Used to eject for me on a previous version but not now.

If I connect the 5D direct to the computer it shows up in the Camera pane, but without an Eject option next to it. When I want to remove it I dont need to eject, just pull out the cable.

Connecting the Gopro in this manner still comes up with an Eject button so situation seems to change depending on which camera and how you are accessing the media.
