can't eject media with fcpx open

I'm using fcpx on a late 2009 13" mbp (8g ram, events and projects going to an external fw800 drive) to edit dSLR video captured on SD cards. I insert a card and do an 'import', initially set to 'optimize media' and 'analyze people', then trying it without transcoding to optimize. The media transfers OK, taking quite a while but completing - the background tasks show 100%, all tasks idle, and all the clips are in the event browser - but I can't eject the SD card; the finder indicates it's still in use by final cut ("The disk "" couldn't be ejected because "Final Cut Pro" is using it").

I'm pretty sure I've been able to eject media with it running at some point - after letting it sit for days on a few short clips - but that's unacceptable - I don't have days to import media. I can quit final cut, eject the card, then restart it, but starting fc takes quite a while to restart (>5 minutes - or much longer; at least once I've had to reboot to get FC restarted). Is there a recommended technique to get fc to 'let go' of a media card, or do I need to use the finder to copy the media to a local drive first, THEN tell fc to do the import from there?

thanks,

ch

Same for me Michael.

OSX 10.8.3

FCPX 10.0.8

Put SDHC card from Canon 600D into SD slot on iMac

In FCPX File>Import>Media

Have check box to close Import window deselected - so window stays open after import.

Import clips

When import fully complete - select eject icon at top left of Import window next to "Canon EOS" (ie the SD card)

Thumbnails disappear from window - but "Canon EOS" still there

Can not eject from Finder either as it says "cannot eject as it is being used by FCP"

Must quit FCP to be able to then eject SD from Finder.

This tip does not solve the problem for me at all. After I complete an import, I am able to click the eject button that appears in the import window, and I do see that the clips disappear (though the camera name still appears in the lefthand column). On my desktop are a disk two disk images that correspond to the camera's internal memory and the SD card. Any attempt to eject them in the finder (e.g. right-click>Eject) is met with: cannot eject...in use by FCP...quit app and try again...

As I have said before, this really stinks when you have footage on three different cams as part of a multicam shoot and you have to quit the app multiple times.

Same here, FCPX 10.0.8, OS 10.7.5 - very frustrating.

Fwiw, cards formatted by my Panasonic AVCCAM cameras will eject, cards formatted by a Canon 600d will not, without exception.

The Canon cards show as two icons (Stills and Video cameras) in the import pane, whereas the Panasonic cards just as a single icon.

Switching to another Event does not work for me.

The current version is 10.1.1 and this *has* been fixed.

Actually, media management is quite different, and, IMHO, vastly superior, in the new version.

So much so that before updating it is very much recommended that you understand the new library model.

A very good place to start is with these free videos from Ripple Training:

But isn't 10.1.1 Mavericks-only? In which case those of us who can't upgrade for one reason or another are stuck with buggy software.

I'm aware that Apple - or any software developer for that matter - is not obliged to support older versions, but this is not a bug-fix, it's an upgrade, and as with all upgrades that require a sytem upgrade, there will always be a lot of people who can't use it for some time to come (hello fellow Pro Tools users!).

It's now August 2015 and this is still an issue. I'm relatively new to FCPX as I wanted to wait for the bugs and added features that I expected would be fixed and added. But this one is quite rudimentary. Apple, I know you can fix this. What's the hold up?

For me it's 50/50... sometimes it ejects, sometimes it does not want to and I get the same "final cut is using..." error message. this is silly, the importing is complete, let me eject the card, please. We should not have to quit FCPX to eject, then restart. that slows down my business.

thanks for the prompt response, Tom.

I'm using SanDisk and Transcend SD cards. When i go back into the import screen, I click the eject button, all the media files disappear, but the card is still present on the desktop and I get the beachball...

I'm on 10.2.1, importing into the library, creating proxy media, analyzing for balance color and to fix audio problems. I also have the box checked to close window after import stats as I want to get right to work and not hang around in the import screen.

The media files are coming from my Panasonic HMC40 - AVCHD; and my Canon MarkIII
