I'd like to be able to add a track with a harp as a software instrument, and then type in my own notes. But this doesn't seem possible. Are there any plug-ins for GarageBand that will let one add a software instrument that isn't listed?
Good point, Hang Time. Garritan Personal Orchestra is an Audio Unit plug-in. At this point in time, there aren't ANY Audio Unit plug-ins that work with Intel Macs except the Apple-brand ones that ship with Mac OS 10.4.4.
The Garritan Personal Orchestra uses the Native Instruments Kontakt playback engine. Garritan and Native Instruments are separate companies.
So using the Garritan Personal Orchestra on an Intel Mac will have to wait until the Native Instruments company releases a new version of Kontakt Player (which should be made available for free to Garritan owners).
Garritan is on record as saying they hope this will happen "in the March-April time frame".
Yes, GPO is what we call "resource intensive". I have a Mac mini with 1GB RAM and I can use a few simultaneous monophonic instruments with Garritan but I can't use anything close to its full resources.
I hope to get one of the new Intel Macs in a few months after the third party companies have a chance to provide support.
Actually I bought that Jam Pack as well and I agree the harps sound great. I also have a friend of mine that composes for television and has a very expensive set of classical samples and he says that this Jam Pack is a wicked buy.
