Thunderbolt extension cable for apple display?

I was so excited when I received my Promise Pagasus raid system. But there is a problem:

I have a macbook pro, an Apple thunderbolt display and now I would like to daisy chain the Pegasus between the display and the computer. The problem is that the cable coming from the display is extremely short after the point where it splits up. Unless I put the Pegasus (a large box) right next to my laptop on the desk (no room for that) I cannot daisy chain. A thunderbolt extension cable would do the trick, but they do not exist?

I am sure somebody else has run into this problem, please share your solution.

Thank you!

I'm guessing the answer to this is "no" they don't exists (TB-to-TB anyway, just did a google search for it, no luck). The reasons might be due to physical limitations, or because TB is relatively new on the market and companies that make such cables haven't released any as yet, or because I read apple has exclusive rights to the TB technology until 2012 and the various manufacturers may be prohibited from making such devices or don't yet see a wider market to warrant developing such cables.

thanks for your reply.

That is what I figured...

I guess I am curious to see if anybody has come up with a workaround?

Is there a way to use a regular power cord for laptop, use usb extension and daisy chain the thunderbolt; would the display would still work?

I will test this out myself, in the mean time maybe there is somebody out there with an idea?

Thank you

So if I understand you, you are saying...

computer ---> usb cable ---> TB display ---> TB cable ---> Pegasus

If that's correct how does that help? You would still be piping the data through usb at usb speeds. You need all TB cables:

computer ---> TB cable ---> TB display ---> TB cable ---> Pegasus

which is back to your original problem I think, i.e., getting long enough cables.

I don't have one of those TB displays so maybe I'm missing something in understanding this.

I have no idea if I am making sense that's why I went to this forum, but my thinking is:

The display has 3 cables going into the mac:

1. thunderbolt (this is where the data goes through)

2. usb (provides the usb connection to the hub on the back of display)

3. power (provides power to computer)

Would it work?:

1. display ->(TB Cable) pegasus -> (TB cable) mac

2. display -> (usb extension cable) mac

3. display -> nowhere. Instead I will use a regular power cable for the computer

This way I have the whole length of the display -> computer cable to work with and not just after it splits into 3.

Make sense?

I will test it, I just can't right now. Hope to get feedback.

Thanks!

The google search I did did turn up a TB-to-USB cable (which is why I explicitly qualified "TB-to-TB" in my first reply). But isn't that defeating the purpose of using TB? You're "down" to USB2 speed doing that. Not what you want for raid which is why I didn't originally mention it.

NO... NO.... NO.... Don't get confused... That Google search you did gave you a USB cable that incorrectly connects to the VERIZON PHONE - HTC Thunderbolt!!!! Try NOT to get them confused or else you might get caught wasting time and money. Currently, there are no (Apple) Thunderbolt to usb cable...

Here is the APPLE THUNDERBOLT port and cable end:

This one connects to the Verizon HTC "PHONE" Thunderbolt:

- Just to verify... your MacBook Pro "HAS" Thunderbolt, correct??

- You already have a "Thunderbolt Display"???? How did you manage that? I haven't seen any in any store yet or heard of anyone else getting them yet.

Are you saying there is a "USB" cable/connector coming from the display?? If so, that is NOT a Thunderbolt display.

From everything documented, the Thunderbolt display looks like this: (the only cables built-in are the normal A/C power cable, then one main cable that has (2) plugs at the end... 1) the magnetic power adapter that connects to laptops... and 2) a Thunderbolt plug.

Is this what your display looks like?

*** OR **** Does Your display ACTUALLY look like this one (which is the older 24-inch LED Cinema Display): This one actually had a USB cable/plug as one of the "Built-In" cables. If this IS what you actually have, it is NOT a Thunderbolt display, although it WILL still work with laptops and the hard drives that DO have Thunderbolt.

If the display IS the older NON-Thunderbolt display, then the display HAS to be at the end of the chain (end of the chain).

It'll be like this (but you'd still need another power connection to the MBPro... since it's still short) :

MacBookPro ---> TB Cable ---> Pegasus Raid ---> mDP (built-in) connector of Cinema Display

If you actually HAVE the TB display, you can possibly set it up like this (using built-in power cable from display):

MacBookPro ---> TB cable (built-in) of the TB display ---> TB cable (separately bought... 2 meters long) from back panel ---> Pegasus Raid

Yes I have the older display, sorry to have used the words 'thunderbolt display'. I was just refererring to the fact that it connects to the thundebolt port on my mac. I didnt even know there was a 'real' thunderbolt display yet! 🙂

Anyway, that still does not change my question...

So you seem to think that everything will work if I power the mac with it's regular power cord?

Ill be able to try soon.

Thanks
