My daughter has a G4 ibook with OS10.4.4. She was given a Belkin router -Model F5D7230-4 and connected it to her DSL modem via her ethernet cable. It was listed on her Airport menu, she put a check mark beside it and it worked. But she has no wireless security. Can she use AirPort Setup Assistant to properly set up this Belkin router? If so would she follow the instructions on screen?
No. The Belkin has a web interface, so just use a web browser to connect to the router (probably "http://192.168.0.1" or "http://192.168.1.1") and change the configuration.
OK. She can't use AirPort Set Up Assistant to set up the Belkin. But I don't understand the rest of you reply. How do you use a web browser to set up security for the Belkin? Where do you put the information you suggest?
When you go to the URL for the router, you will see what looks like a web site. This is actually the configuration interface on the router. Just like any web site, it has links to other pages, each of which pertain to a particular set of configuration parameters. There should be a link that takes you to a page with the wireless security configuration, which will contain editable fields and menus where you can specify the security settings.
If that's still not clear to you, you can download the manual for the router from the following page:
