Are apps in App Store approved by Apple?

I just downloaded "Memorial" (to 9-11). it contains pics and videos from the attack. The videos are coded in Flash!

This is not the first time that this has happened to me. I trashed the others as I expect that I will do with this one.

iPod classic, Mac OS X (10.6.8), iPad-1 IOS 4.3.5

Here is something even more troubling. I just scanned this very briefly but there will be a $9.99 charge for the app after September 11th if this holds true.

I copied this from the review posted above.

As mentioned above, the app will be released in the App Store this Thursday, September 1, and will be free for the first 11 days of September. After those first 11 days it will be priced at $9.99

Like I said, I scanned this very quickly and did not read it in depth.

The Support pages for that app say that the videos are hosted on their website, and also come from other web sources, and may change from one running of the app to the next:

Incidentally, as far as I can tell, the official apps for the 9/11 Memorial are actually these ones:

http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/9-11-memorial-guide/id457056165?mt=8

http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/explore-9-11/id387986451?mt=8

The app that I'm unhappy with is the first one on your "official" list and, looking at your links, the second one appears to be identical. I'll download it and check it out when I get some time.

I thought the one you were unhappy with was this:

The 911 Memorial: Past, Present and Future created by Magnify Media

whereas the ones I linked to are called:

9/11 Memorial Guide and Explore 9/11 both created by the National September 11 Memorial & Museum

You're correct. Dang, they all look the same! I have to go to work. I'll investigate more when I get a chance.

Thanks for getting back to me.

My bad. The correct name is "The 911 Memorial: Past, Present and Future." It's in the "Featured - New and Noteworthy" grouping.

If you get it, go to "The Past" and look at the "Construction of the Twin Towers." All the movies are Flash. Also, in "The Past," look at "The Day of 9/11." Some movies are Flash and some are not. Etc., etc., etc.

Every movie in this app plays fine on my iPad1.

???

Now I'm totally confused. Unfortunately, I'm working right now and won't get a chance to investigate for a few days.

Well, I had a chance to investigate and the movies are sill Flash on my iPad1. I did learn that, contrary to my earlier belief, the movies are not resident on the iPad. They're streamed. Perhaps different servers are sending out different versions? Forgetting about whether it's true or not (we'll never know), does that explanation even make sense?
