Nikon Coolscan V ED and iMac Core Duo

Anybody using their Coolscan V ED, or another film or flatbed scanner, with the new iMac Core Duo? I plan purchasing the CS V ED in the very near future, but unsure whether it will work well with the new iMac.

15" PB G4, 20" iMac Core Duo, and a few iPods, Mac OS X (10.4.4)

> What do you mean by more RAM? Presumably I can't add
RAM to the scanner itself, and in OS X I cannot
allocate more memory to the applications. Do you
mean add more RAM to my Mac? I have 2.5GB in my
PowerMac G5 which is the main computer I've been
using with the scanner. I have 1GB in my MacBook
which is fine under Windows (haven't tried the
MacBook under OS X).

Again, surely 2.5GB RAM with nothing else running
should be more than enough?

I was talking about the RAM in the Mac, of course. At 2.5 GB, you obviously don't have a problem with that, then. I also was under the misconception you were trying to use this with an Intel Mac. I know you mentioned your G5 but since this thread is all about Nikon's Intel compatibility, I must have gotten the wrong idea.

> To me the hassle of crashes and hangs is that I have
to go through the time consuming process of switching
off the scanner, restarting it, launching the
software again etc.
While doing all this between each film might save
having to repeat previews and cropping, I cannot see
that it's much less hassle than putting up with the
crashes?

You think that's time consuming? To restart the software & scanner after every 36 images or so?

Seriously, this little process has saved me countless hours. We're talking about a minute to reboot the scanner and restart the software. All the setups are saved as presets and it takes about 2 seconds to choose them from the menu. It's not like you have to re-boot the computer.

Perhaps you missed the part about me scanning 1000 rolls of film (over 36000 images) to 30 MB image files in a couple of months. If my little reboot process was such a hassle, I'd switch to XP too. I have Windows here too, by the way.

> Really this is seriously poor software, and
having to use workarounds like this is crazy. If
there was a good alternative to the hardware I would
strongly advise others against buying Coolscans due
to the poor support and software. It has certainly
put me off buying any of their other products such as
digital cameras.

Their support is lacking, true. This software needs work, true. But no other film scanner comes close to this one in quality and ease of use... none. Have you tried Poloroid with it's huge cr@ppy PhotoShop plugin? Talk about crashes and instability. I couldn't get two scans of the same photo to ever look the same and I was using the same exact settings!

> Worth trying IF a successful result indicated more
ram would definitely help, but again I cannot believe
that 2.5GB isn't enough?

Yes, RAM does not seem to be your problem.

And it works for me in low end Intel Macs with only 512 MB Ram. I even have the FireWire LS-4000 working on a G3 with only 512 MB Ram.

I really tried to help you but I'm glad you found your solution in XP. Good luck.

I should mention that I'm just going through all my old photos, then I'm selling the scanner. While I hate to tarnish my MacBook with XP, I know it's only short term while I get this 'project' completed. Then I can wipe XP and continue using my MacBook with all the decent Mac software that's out there! This Nikon Scan software really pushed me to the edge for me to be resorting to Windows! Prinicples go out of the Window when it gets this bad...
