Safari can't connect to the server...firefox or whatever other browser can, please help

Hi everyone,

I'm having a very frustrating issue, soon as i start up Safari i always get the Safari can't connect to the server" page. Also its not as if Safari is timing out or as if i first get a blank white page that could point out that its loading or searching the start up page without luck, nope, soon as i click the safari icon there is the grey page saying safari can't connect. It does this for whatever site adres i type in or whatever adres i have set as homepage.

strange thing is i never have a problem when using Firefox or any other webrowser simply works , soon as i start up firefox it just opens my start up page without any issues what so ever.

tryed everything from un-instaling and re-installing Safari to cleaning history, cache, reset Safari...checked out if maybe it has something to do with my account permissions but everything seems ok, afterall there's only one account set on the computer at that is the admin, the guest account is disabled. No parental controls are set on the computer.

After re-installing Safari and first time i opened safari i got this option saying that there seemed to be a problem conecting to the server and asked if i want to do some trouble shooting clicked yes and it said that there seemed to be no problem with my internet connection, yet i keep getting the "Safari can't connect to the server" page " e v e r y t i m e

I'm using Safari 5.1

Hoping someone here could give me a heads up on how to get this **** browser to work. All help is really appreciated

I had this problem early on with Lion and Safari. Sometimes just hitting Cmd-R a few times will get Safari to kick in.

If not, have a look at what, if any, extensions are installed (menu: Safari > Safari Extensions...) and disable all of them. I remember some of the default ones that got installed with 5.1 caused problems for me. See if that helps.

thank you for your time and replying softwater!

unfortinatly non of the above mentioned suggestions work, hitting Cmd-R does absolutely nothing, the page keeps saying "can't connect..." its not even trying to connect really...only a second after i launch Safari i get the page.

The Extension list is completely empty..there are no third party extensions installed what-so-ever.

I loged in to my wife's macbook using my internet connection and Safari just works...checked out all the Safari settings on here computer and compared them to mine and its exactly the same set up...only thing is Safari on my MacPro, for some reason just doesn't work

all help is welcome

@Linc Davis

Wow, when booting in safe mode Safari has "no" problem with whatever website adres i type in...works like it should.

Soon as i start (not in safe mode) same problem again. Any idea on what could be the problem in this case (works in safe mode, doesn't work when starting up normaly)

@ Carolyn, thnks for the reply, computer is completely up to date, no awaiting updates...

Third-party system modifications are a common cause of instability and poor performance. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions -- they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.

Reboot as usual (not in safe mode) if you haven't already done so. Launch the Terminal application, copy or drag -- do not type -- the line of text below into the window, and press return:

kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '

Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)

Next, do the same thing with this line:

sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '

That's one line, not two. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.

Next, this command:

launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '

Again, one line. Finally, one more:

ls -1A {,/}Library/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Ser,Sta}* 2> /dev/null

Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.

You can then quit Terminal.

Your problem is likely caused by the "Little Snitch" application firewall, which is indeed very much a firewall. Not only is it outdated, it's also misconfigured. This is a very powerful tool, which you almost certainly don't need. I strongly suggest you uninstall it. Otherwise, you have to keep it updated, and you have to learn how to deal with the problems it can cause, which are many. I don't know how to uninstall it. It should have come with an uninstaller; if not, ask the developer for instructions.

Uninstall the completely useless "MacKeeper" and "TechTool Pro" crapware. Again, I can't tell you how.

Also uninstall the obsolete ClickToFlash internet plugin. The current version of that product is implemented as a Safari extension, which you can find by selecting Safari > Preferences > Extensions from the Safari menu bar and clicking the "Get Extensions" button.

There's more, but I'm not going to answer questions you didn't ask.

I'm going to remove the stuff you said and get back to you to see if it indeed was litle snitch causing the problem.

"There's more, but I'm not going to answer questions you didn't ask."

Please if you have any sugestions on stuff i should remove or other tips that can have my computer running more smooth/stable do say so, i'm a complete noob when it comes to the technical part of computers.

Basically all the items listed above represent parts of third-party system modifications. By that I mean software that affects the way other software works, at least potentially. Some of what you have may be useful, and even necessary for your work. Some of it is useless, and some is harmful. There's no simple way to classify it all. I suggest you take a careful inventory of everything you have installed, and remove whatever you don't know you need.
