Login screen shows "update needed" but no updates are available

Hi All,

Has anyone experienced the login screen showing "update needed" but upon checking software updates it reports my system is upto date, also checked mac store and itunes which they both report are upto date, so I'm kind of confused as to why the login screen always reports "Update needed".

I'm using an iMac 2010 edition, OS is Lion.

Thanks for any tips.

I encontered this problem for the first time after installing Mountain Lion. I didn't relish the prospect of disabling and re-enabling FileVault, so I just repaired disk permissions with Disk Utility, re-downloaded and re-installed Java manually from Apple's web site <http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1515> and re-selected my user login photo and re-typed my user name (for good measure). After rebooting, everything is back to normal.

I had this exact problem ever since upgrading to Mavericks. The solution for me was to go into Security/Privacy, unlock that screen, then there was a message about "some users have to put in a password to unlock". I clicked on the list of users and there was only one - mine, and it had a check mark next to it. I clicked ok and that message went away and did not come back. i logged out and there is my icon and no more "update needed"! I had ignored this issue for a long time, and I'm so glad i didn't bother to decrypt and reencrypt my entire 1TB SSD!

I had this problem too w/MacOS X Yosemite 10.10.1. I didn’t want to decrypt my FileVault disk, and fortunately I didn’t need to. Interestingly as other users have reported, I did see a message somewhere that a JavaScript update was available & did I want to install it. I said no. I can’t find anywhere to install that update again; it doesn’t show up in the App Store’s update page.

My version of the fix comes from these Apple Discussion Forums, as well as info here: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/152271/user-update-needed-after-updatin g-to-mac-os-x-yosemite

Try the following.

1) Restart your computer. When the screen turns black, immediately hold down Cmd-R to boot to recovery mode. Go to Disk Utility, click your hard drive, and Repair Disk.

2) Restart. Login to your account. Launch Disk Utility. Click your disk & Repair Permissions.

3) Go to Apple menu: System Preferences: Users & Groups. Click your photo, choose a different picture, hit Done so the new picture saves. (In my case I also changed my password, although I’m not sure if that was necessary or not.)

4) Restart. All the Update Needed text over the names was gone, and all pictures came back.

5) Login to your account again. In Apple menu: System Preferences: Users & Groups, change your picture back to what you want. (And if necessary, change your password back to normal).

All seems good.

I had this problem after I did a clean install on an attached FireWire disc. After the install completed and the computer had restarted, it was asking for a password but no user was specified. Problem was that I'd done the install on an encrypted disk. The password it was after was the encryption password - though that wasn't obvious from the message on the screen.
